From today's Cyprus Mail. "Using what appears to be quad bikes, unknown individuals destroyed cages placed to protect turtle nests on Limni beach in Polis, it emerged on Tuesday. The head of the fisheries department, Marina Argyrou, said 19 out of 70 cages were destroyed but it was not immediately known whether the eggs in the nests had been affected and to what extent. Argyrou said they would only know in the next days or weeks when the eggs were expected to hatch. The destruction was discovered by fisheries personnel on Monday. The case was immediately reported to police. “They were shocked because it was the first time they saw such a thing,” Argyrou said. Judging from the tracks left on the beach, it appeared the destruction was deliberate. The site is a nesting ground for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), considered an endangered species and protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature." http://cyprus-mail.com/2017/09/05/turtle-nests-destroyed-limni-beach/ |
