This article from Cyprus Mail indicates the ease with which data can be gained & used illegally;

Interestingly two people involved have links with the police & one is (or was) a Cyta employee.

Well I am certain cyta has sold my number to a marketing company, in the 90's it was junk mail now it's junk sms, very annoying.
