The latest internet issue of the UK gov travel advice on Cyprus states "Driving standards are poor. You should drive with great care" After being here 14 years its surprised me

We moved from Malta and believe me when I say that driving in Cyprus is a pleasure compared with driving in Malta.

I have been driving for over 25 years in Cyprus, and it is a great place for motoring, with hundreds of miles of deserted roads. I have also driven extensively outside Cyprus and, on balance, the failings of drivers here are no worse than they are anywhere else, and some places are very definitely worse. Italy, for example can be quite alarming, especially around the cities in the rush hours; and Britain's drivers tend to be angry and aggressive and engage in dangerous high speed tailgating on the motorways.

However coming back from Troodos yesterday morning (via Pachna and Avdimou), following an early morning walk in the mountains, I can see where the travel advice was coming from.

I was driven off the road in Platres by an old buffer, who looked about 90, who had no clue that what he had done was both wrong and dangerous. That was but the first of several hair raising experiences. It got so bad on the rest of the journey that I took the unusual step of taking the motorway at the earliest opportunity, to complete the journey in relative safety. Even in Paphos, I travelled behind a woman in a small car who turned right from the left lane, with no signal, alarming the driver in the right lane behind her; and who was clearly having difficulty staying between the lane markers - even at 10.30 in the morning, so that probably means without alcohol. Her passenger must have had the white knuckle ride of a lifetime.

I may skip travelling to the mountains for exercise until after August, when things quieten down on the roads.

Having driven for 25 years in Cyprus you have to expect the unexpected. Have to say though compared to Athens driving in Paphos is a piece of cake :banana
