Here's something that has been bugging me for a while.

Car registration letters only change now when all the permutations have been used (rather than every year as previously).

When I drive around I see loads of "K" and "M" registrations, but hardly any "L". Anyone have any idea why?

Yesterday I had to drive from Paphos to Polis and back and passed hundreds of cars, but only 3 of them had "L" registrations. Strangely all of them were LAQ plates and I have a sneaking feeling that one of them was the same hire car that I passed twice - once in each direction.

There must be a reason why, but I have no idea what it is.

As I understand it, motor vehicle licensing decided "L" was too easily confused with some other letter, so after only a very short issue of "L" it is was discontinued in favour of M.

The number of plates beginning with the letter L is relatively small as when the new system of showing month/year of manufacture came in these all started with M and the use of L as the starting letter was abandoned.

Certain letters have never been used - F, G, I, J - to avoid confusion or difficulty with Greek letters. Whether they use N we'll soon see.

"M" was introduced along with the month year digits on the new number plates in preparation for the traffic cameras that are being introduced shortly. All to do with number plate recognition. Non-Greek alphabet letters are not used on number plates, because in Greek, they don't exist.

The letter N is already used in registrations, so I guess so.
