Does anyone know if an Amazon Echo works in Cyprus. People may know this as an Alexa. My daughter, in the UK, has one which works very well and I was thinking of bringing one out to use in Cyprus if it works here. I have wifi with Cyta.
Thanks.
Pedro.

No, it doesn't...

Essentially, you can't download the required ap on your phone. You can download an unofficial 'apk' but I didn't want to risk it.

Theoretically I suppose you could download the ap while in the UK and then bring it out...?

Anyway, I sent mine back for a refund and ordered a Google Home instead. It is awesome and with hindsight I wished I'd got one in the first place. They are available on ebay for about £107 and work perfectly here.

Thank you. To be quite honest I had never heard of this but I will read up on it and most likely buy one.

Yes, check out the comparison videos on YouTube...

I have just ordered another and Mrs. CyprusGrump likes it too...

Unlike the Echo, you can ask her 'contextual' questions... So for instance you can say, "Who won the FA Cup in 1973?" and then ask, "Who was their goalkeeper?"...

It doesn't support as many third-party devices or 'skills' as the Echo (yet) but it is way ahead in search and music capabilities...

So you can say, "Play some Elton John" and she will play EJ tracks until you become bored with him... or "Play classical music" or whatever...

Or you can ask her to play a particular track and she will then make up a playlist that compliments it and play that after...

I love it!

I got one for my birthday it was bought and set up there, it works ok here but does not recognise Rock Fm or Sunshine Radio Cyprus; don't ask for a joke they are terrible, it connects to my computer for a power supply and links to my wifi speakers. :pint

With the google home do you have to subscribe for it? If so, who to and how much is it to get the music? How easy is it to set up?

You need either a Google Play Music or a Spotify account.

I chose Google - it costs ~£7 per month.

Gives you access to billions of tracks plus you can upload your own music (up to 50,000 tracks) and stream it to any of your mobile devices.

I've done ok without one for 75 years - I guess I don't want one now!
