Big Lizzie's location is top secret, says MoD (But anyone - including Mr Putin - can track her on this FREE smartphone app!)
• Apps Vessel Finder and Marine Traffic track progress of Queen Elizabeth carrier
• This is despite Ministry of Defence saying it was only 'somewhere in North Sea'
• The Kremlin described the carrier, nicknamed Big Lizzie, as a ‘convenient target’
By Mark Nicol for The Mail on Sunday

She is Britain’s state-of-the-art £3.1 billion aircraft carrier which Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon has promised to protect from ‘envious’ Russian President Vladimir Putin.
And when The Mail on Sunday asked the Ministry of Defence for details of HMS Queen Elizabeth’s course during her sea trials, security-conscious naval chiefs would confirm only that she was somewhere in the North Sea.
Yet all any Kremlin spy or ship-spotter needs to do to keep track of the 65,000-ton vessel is download one of the mobile phone apps which are showing her every move.
The free apps, Vessel Finder and Marine Traffic, plot her progress by the minute – making a mockery of Sir Michael’s pledge to protect the carrier from Russian intelligence-gatherers.

Time for the 'old heads' to be replaced I think?

Given that we currently don't have any planes which can actually land on it, it's not exactly a threat.

The most incredible aspect of the whole farce is the lack of planes. The F35B's are virtually the only planes that can take off and land on those white elephants, they are no where near ready for operational service and are beset by problems and the cost of them has gone through the roof- so much so that the original complement of 36 per carrier has been scaled back to about 15 .

That and the fact we don't have enough ships to protect the carriers makes the whole thing even more ridiculous (although not as ridiculous as the on going admiral to ship ratio whereby the Royal Navy has more of the former than the latter  )

The AIS system that will be on board can at any time make the ship "Vanish" of the screen. Whilst sea trials are on going it would appear that at present they are not concerned.

I would imagine that the ruskies not only know where it is at all times, they know how many crew are on board, what colorthere underpants are and what they ate for breakfast ....
vice=versa

Agreed.
It's doing 22.5 knots at present but, if they 'switch off' it's location, we won't know it's speed, direction or destination.
The same applies to military aircraft.

We had the AIS system on our yacht and we could turn off the SEND button so that we were just receiving the information from other vessels currently using the system in our area. Sometimes we came across navy vessels and even though we could physically see them they did not register on our AIS system but we kept in contact by VHF radio.

If we sorted out the chancers and the spongers (at all levels of society) we could probably afford to gold plate both these white elephant carriers and still run a budget surplus :-(

I would love to be in a world where aircraft carriers and Trident missiles are white elephants, unfortunately for our own safety we need them, too many nations would happily trample us into the dirt if we could not adequately defend ourselves.

In that instance I know who would be the first to complain that we should have had these defences.

Gary.

Don't worry,,these "white elephants" will be put out to graze,or even cut up for their meat if Jeremy gets in power.Or,as we never learn off history, flog them to another up and coming power to be later used as a threat against us

Yes coys your right..Start with the Royal family ( the only thing that the rest of the world envies us for) and because they cost every man woman and child 87 pence a year. :clap
We would then be able to increase our overseas aid 62 billion :banana

It's £62 million and that isn't a lot in the general scheme of things.

I don't like the concept of inherited privilege in the UK and the Royal Family are the embodiment of that, but for some reason unbeknown to me there is sufficient interest in their trials and tribulations that they have become "cost effective"

I would however suggest they could be even more "cost effective" if they trimmed some of the excess fat and surplus residences- as it currently stands the are living too long, having too many kids and we have three direct "heirs in waiting" milking the public purse waiting for the current monarch to pop her clogs  Anne, Andrew, Edward and their offspring could well do with getting themselves proper jobs and leaving the "king thing" to those better "qualified"

The UK needs a proper value for money military and deterrent. Unfortunately the carriers are the wrong thing at the wrong time built for the wrong reasons and to be equipped with the wrong planes - they are a hugely expensive mistake IMHO and should be a lot more "cost effective" than they can ever be, and therefore less combat efficient than they should be :-(

Oddly enough if overseas aid was spent wisely it could be like the Royal family- virtually self financing. Trade, goodwill, humanitarian relief etc- in theory it is a great idea

Unfortunately most of it is squandered on vanity projects and has nothing like the impact it should have for what is a huge amount of money - it primarily pays for despots and their cronies' new German limos and does nothing to stop foreign nationals upping sticks and heading to the UK for a bit more milk and honey :-(

Ilex, there are thousands of people on huge salaries employed one way or the other in the overseas aid programme. And they are there simply to give away the British workers hard earned cash.......Not mine any more. ;)

Wonderfully timed reminder of the problems created by the Royal "hangers on" in the papers today- apparently if you know Fergie and have plenty of dosh (I don't suppose she would have anything to do with you if you didn't  )she can arrange for you to hold your kid's birthday party at Buckingham Palace
