Well I missed most of the G.E. aftermath as I was in USA.

Then I thought, it doesn't matter who is in power, hung parliament or not, it makes no difference to me or anyone I know.

Has the political process affected anyone on here?

By and large politics doesn't really make that much difference to ordinary people in a real democracy- and democracy is the key here because a properly functioning democracy usually produces a workable balance between all groups in society

Unfortunately what we are currently seeing is an unwillingness to accept democratic decisions by many in the UK and an unwillingness by EU politicians in particular to limit the process of democracy - and that's when it all starts getting a lot nastier and potentially a lot more sinister. Attitudes become more polarised in the case of the former and politicians become a lot more blasé in the case of the latter.

The whole situation in the UK has become a volatile mess, and that is being replicated throughout Europe and the EU where the combination of a central legislative authority that can over rule the governing national interest has led to a free for all where all sorts of unworkable projects and fanciful schemes are set it stone and distorted to ludicrous degrees. Common sense is bring forced to take a back seat to political correctness, vested interests and human rights directives (promoted and propagated as "progress") and it is all going to result in one big and almighty shambles (and that will impact you )

:agree :goodpost
not only that but there is another impact on you and on all of us: in the case of the EU we have to pay for it!
Which is another reason (of many!) why we (the UK) are leaving the EU.

Britain will have to pay something to leave- as long as it is only the due amount from commitments we have made and takes into account our EU assets I have no problem with that.

Britain needs to control its borders and regulate who is coming into the UK and for what purpose - the events of last weeks have made that even more imperative. Britain in the EU with the current EU rules cannot do that.

Britain is now doing more trade with the rest of the world that it does with the EU- that is a change that will continue in the same direction as the rest of the world grows quicker than the EU, so being restricted by Brussels' single market rules becomes a very silly scenario indeed. Others may choose to remain in the EU, but it is time Britain left

The problem is the whole political world has gone topsy-turvy because of all the problems the politicians themselves have created (in this case because there are too many of them- regional , national and supra national) There are Labour supporters who have seen what the freedom of movement has done to their fortunes voting Conservative to get Britain out, there are Conservative voters backing Labour because they think they won't follow through on Brexit and their comfortable little lives won't be so disrupted

No one is voting for what the want any more, they are voting try and scupper the plans of everyone else, which is always going result in confrontational politics that really has no place in a proper democracy, but that's what happens when you have too many cooks making the broth. Britain is now the closest it's ever been to having a Marxist government- that's how much the on going stupidity and inability to accept a democratic result has warped peoples perceptions of all things political

Having wealth is a wonderful 'insulator' from the problems of the real world Big Nev, as I'm sure you are aware from this statement in your OP.

Have to agree wholeheartedly with much of this article regarding democracy in its current UK form

He doesn't say he is wealthy.
But if he is, what you say is right.

Being comfortable isn't the same as being wealthy and being comfortable does indeed immunise you from a lot of the shocks, but be you either wealthy or comfortable you should always be aware that there are others less fortunate than yourself that do need help

Problem is the genuinely needy have been lost amongst the urine extractors, it's now almost impossible to identify the unfortunate from the unscrupulous, and a lot of people's attitudes have hardened because of that

Not one of my daily reads, Ilex, but I have just followed your link.
An excellent, thought-provoking description which, I think, ALL should read.
It puts into perspective the futility & disruption of protest ....
as opposed to requiring those in power (of all parties) to actually do their duty on behalf of the entire population (instead of just 'lining their own little pockets'). :clap :clap

Are you saying I'm wealthy?

I have a pension that is just over the income tax paying threshold
I have £10,000 savings just in case
If having a house with no mortgage is wealthy so be it.....but I paid for that out of taxed income over 30 years of working hard.

I've also go a bit of a millstone round my neck in my apartment in Cyprus which I'm trying to sell at a €50000 loss!

Ok then I'm wealthy.

Hi Big Nev,

Let's review the details you provided & see the impression it creates;

1. Owner of a house free from a mortgage, definitely an asset.
2. Owner of an apartment you claim to be a millstone, but is viewed as an asset, however much it has depreciated. Current value undeclared, but let's assume not less than say £60,000?
3. Receiving a pension "slightly above the threshold to pay tax", not too shabby!
4. Assets paid for "after 30 years of hard work", hardly an above average length of time. Im guessing you retired in early middle age?
5. Rainy-day fund declared of £10,000 in cash. Not stated, but assumed this is attracting interest?
6. Sufficient income to be able to afford declared recent trip to America, hardly a cheap option.

So compared to the average Joe, in answer to your question Big Nev, I'd say you were relatively wealthy IMHO.

Let's answer your points TopGun

1. Mortgage free after paying it off over 30 years
2. Apartment also bought with a mortgage whilst working
3. The tax threshold is £11500 so just above makes it less than the average earnings in UK and less than I would get if I was on minimum wage!
4. The assets were paid for over a 30 year mortgage term, I actually worked for 43 years.
5. The rainy day fund includes current account balance...no interest, and bank deposit at an enormous 0.5% interest. Funded mainly by the lump sum paid when drawing pension down.
6. American trip saved and scrimped for over the last 3 years. Even people on benefits take foreign holidays. I wouldn't say that spending £2500 was extravagant for 2 people after 3 years saving.

So if you call that wealthy you must be very badly off. I pity you.

The impression changes Big Nev, when you clarify the details as you have just done.
e.g You actually worked for 43 years, not 30!

Or maybe the measure of wealth is wrong in the first place. Why should it be measured financially when the real key to wealth is happiness of the person and spirit.

Going back some and adopting real personal values would be a great help.

Personally I think that people eligible to vote every 4 or 5 years do so according to their political beliefs, or conscience or whatever and then spend the next 4 or 5 years living under the political system of the winners, whilst having the occasional moan about this lot or that lot and getting on with the important part of life....living.
So if Corbyn gets in next time I assume the country will slide ever more quickly towards disaster because of socialist/marxist spend, spend, spend policies being introduced, and just in time May or her successor would be voted back in and strip public services more and more of much needed money to continue serving the public until Corbyn or his successor get back in and spend spend spend again, until an so on and so forth and ad nauseum.
Of course, the most annoying part of all this hooh haah is whichever political party gets in the price of beer and spirits will go up. Yah boo. :pint
