Anyone else think the message from Microsoft encouraging you to adjust your privacy settings prior to upgrading, contains a hidden agenda?
IMHO I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw 'em!

Windows has always had a big brother basis, almost a form of legalised hacking, so they want you to configure your machine so they have maximum access to it. I still insist the worst and most destructive virus I have ever downloaded was from MS and was called windows genuine advantage.

Windows 10 was the worst one ever for me. Couldn't get to grips with it all. So had everything changed back to Windows 7.

WGA.exe module could be renamed, deleted, etc

So, can anyone suggest an expediant way forward to get the upgrade & then maintain privacy from big brother MS/USA Gov't?

MS must have recognised a lot of people locking-off their 'services' & spent time devising a new way to spy on us, so it is probably very difficult to avoid/circumvent IMHO, but I'm not a computer whiz.

Need a techie on this one I think - is there anybody there?

The reason I am grumpy about ms is I had paid full price for an original copy of xp, when I ran wga it shut down non ms add ons and things which did not have an ms electronic signature, also it reconfigured many things, it was like firstime run a new system, and then it threatened to shut down my system as Windows was not original, since then some years ago I have run Linux 99% of the time. Any computer parts which carry a "Microsoft approved " label i have not purchased either.
