I have just read that a 64 year old Russian lady has died whilst swimming in Ayai Napa, again another sad statistic of people who drown in the seas around Cyprus. You do not realise just how dangerous the seas are around the island, I suppose the warm sunny climate lure people into a false sense of security.

You can die swimming without actually drowning- I believe there is a post mortem to determine how she died, but a heart attack or a stroke are just as likely causes of death as drowning and have nothing to do with the sea itself ?

Fully agree my friend but if you look at the statistics there does appear to be a lot deaths in and around the shores of Cyprus, even recently one died in Paphos.
Cold water does have an effect in people, it also can be the an issue with undiagnosed conditions and you are right it may be unrelated.

It is impossible to stop people swimming in the sea and it is impossible to tame the sea.

There will always be people drowning themselves after getting into difficulties and I doubt Cyprus is all that much different from anywhere else in the Med in the average stats for such occurrences :-(

I don't think Cyprus is any worse than any other sunshine destination, plus when things do go wrong the paramedics etc usually arrive in very quick time.
I have noticed that what fatalities there are here thru swimming tend to be alcohol related, especially in older people.
IF YOU DRINK DON'T SWIM. DON'T RISK IT.
Geoff.

I've been in beach side restaurants and seen people so tanked up, that they cannot stand up, filled up with meze then go in for a dip......don't blame others when things then go wrong
