Is this a spot the bat competition ?

I saw one that was the size of a seagull when I was last over in March, it was flying around for 10-15 minutes

This was on Agiponoros Road ( the road that runs parallel with Aposotolou Pavlou Ave )

It was near the charity shop just before you get to Nikis Kebab House going up the hill

Do I win a prize ?

Many years ago we stayed in a self catering studio apartment just above the Handkerchief Tree/King Solomon's Tomb. There were large fruit bats hanging around in the caves that form part of the rock formation on the TOK/Mall junction.

Becoming rarer, but they are still in Cyprus

We have a date palm in our garden- beautiful tree about 35 feet high and full of dates from about late July to October and there is still withered but obviously edible fruit on it into February- March. I regularly see them crawling (that's right crawling) along the fronds on the tree because the dates are such easy pickings, but they are easily spooked. Although they drop quite copious amount of poo all over my drive and cars I would never dream of harming them or cutting off their food supply

Odd thing is that they eat from this tree even when there is no fruit on it- even through winter they gather fruit from other shorter trees and return to eat it at their "favourite" tree where the obviously now feel very much at home :woohoo

So a tall date palm in a quiet area is your best bet, even if there are no dates on it. Anything lower and they will be gone they before you get anywhere near them. I often find half eaten loquats and carobs under this tree, although with bigger fruits like pomegranates they tend to eat them on the producing tree itself. My pomegranates get decimated by them every year, but I have never gotten close enough to catch them at

In the trees between the car park and the end of the garden at Hondros Restaurant, near the harbour.

Are the 'garden bird sized' bats seen at dusk in the garden fruit bats?

The fruit bats are 'protected' in Cyprus and there used to be a large colony in the gorge at the edge of Kissonerga village, until a few years ago when some pratt with a shotgun killed about 50 of them. I now see them only rarely.

No Linda
Fruit Bats are much bigger than the small bats flying around at nighttime

The fruit bats in my orchard are about the size of a pigeon but with longer wings

That's about the right description.
I don't know which species the little ones are .... But, if we leave some patio doors open in the evening, the flippin' little mammals decide to take a flight around our lounge !
They seem to like flying high and, as we have high ceilings, they can take hours to tire themselves out, fly lower and exit through the patio doors.
Lucky for them ... we are animal lovers
