It was still similar, when I drove over for the day from Nicosia in 1961, (I was posted to RAF Nicosia in Nov 1960 and worked on Hastings Aircraft of LXX Squadron) I had bought (through NAAFI HP) my brand new Simca Elysee at the age of 22!!! for 508 Pounds. Cyprus pounds were in 'mils' in those days.

I was unloading RAF planes at Nicosia (not on my own) returning from Libya in 1966 not long before the RAF moved out to the larger SBA at Akrotiri which was temporary closed for runway lengthening, the following week it was back to Episkopi and into the regimental Band, I still have a 250 mil note 5 bob from those days, our landlady said how small Paphos was in the mid 60s.

Strange coincidence I was looking through a box of photos and came across our Cypriot rent book for our first rental in Limassol, dates start in July 1966. £22 Cypriot pounds per month (the UK & Cypriot were equal back then, as were 1 shilling =50 mils, 2 shilling = 100 mils

Following the posts about old currency above, until the adoption of the Euro the main currency unit was the Cyprus Pound. It used to be linked to the UK Pound at one point but in 1955 the Cyprus Pound was decimalised and, rather than being divided into shillings and piastres, it was divided into 1,000 mils.

Can't beat a nice bit of history!

I'm trying to add a shot from 1966 of the family that we rented our house in Limassol from. One shot is of Val who'd just arrived she was 19years old, we'd been married just a few months, a few days ago Sun May 7th was our 51st wedding anniversary, Eleni pictured with Pambos came from Paphos, sadly they have both passed away but we still visit with their daughter Zoe.

Re tide in cyprus
Some years ago I worked on the water sports at the far end of banana bay behind the ascos hotel, from day to day there was a small difference in the water height, max to min a few centimetres but it did not follow a rhythm the way a tide Does?

This is a 1966 era 250 mil note that I found amongst my old army gear in my loft.

Met up with 3 old army friends and their Ladies this week when we visited our regimental museum, we reminisced about our time when posted to Cyprus in 1965/8, we all have very fond memories of the posting.
