Spotted today on the BBC website.... I'm sure most have us have seen the Hovis advert and that street, but is it the steepest?

I would say the hill between Hard Knott and Rhino in the Lake District is the steepest.
A very hairy drive the first time you do it, and my first time was in my Jowett Bradford Van
in 1961. One of those hills/roads you just hope nobody is going the other way!
1 in 2.5!!
Geoff.

Hard Knott is 1 in 3 I think ; I used to drive over it when working up in the lakes for North West Water.

Did you check out the link to the BBC article?

Also take a look at the video with the water slide in Lincoln - only on a warm sunny day, methinks! :greetings

Agree that hill is really really steep. In fact I reckon that it is the steepest. No wonder there is a grab rail on the very steepest part.

Not the steepest, but Box Hill near Dorking is a cracking road, they used to film The Saint there to make it appear to be on the Italian Riviera.
Porlock hill in North Yorkshire also, very nice.
I went to Biggin Hill a few times and there is a very steep road there also.

Try riding over Hard Knott and Rhino passes on a 50 cc Yamahar FS1E moped.
I did in the 70's.
I was in second gear till the car in front mucked his gears up!

I have seen a few cars with smoking brakes there a few times.
My brother had a static caravan up near Caldbeck so we where there quite a lot!
Fizze or FS1E where good at making your bum num after 50 miles!

A little story for those who had a moped in the mid 70's.
I had a heavily tuned puch vz50 (flying banana) I could see off a stock fsie , one day a suzuki ap50 went past me, I had a devil of a job to almost keep up with it, later on caught it at traffic lights, pulled along side to look at this fire Breather!! Only to see ap100 on the side, at the time dint know they made an ap50 with a 100 engine, it was identical.

I think they like to put a steep hill in most places - it certainly makes a talking point of it.

I can't recall how many times we got letters to the Customer Service department at the UK tour ops I worked for from disgruntled holidaymakers after their trek to their hotel up "cardiac hill" and the photos too!
