My daughter, Charlotte is in college studying fashion and textiles and today she got a sewing machine needle in her finger. :eek She was advised to go to A&E. At the time I was at my sister's, in the garden, with bag and mobile inside and I didn't know that she was trying to reach me.

She contacted her boyfriend who took her to hospital where she was when she finally got through to me. I decided not to go to the hospital as I thought it would be a simple case of the needle being pulled out............

..........An x-ray showed the piece of broken needle to be embedded in the bone, too complicated for A&E to remove, so orthapeadics were called and the surgeon attempted to lift the nail, after injecting local anaesthetic, but he decided that Charlotte would be better having a general anaesthetic to remove the piece of needle tomorrow!
Image

Now Charlotte is no stranger to hospital and operations as she has had 191, yes that's 191 surgeries for paediatric airway disease, to give it it's general name, as from the age of 2 her airway has been at risk of collapsing and she now has a tracheostomy.

So she said she felt weepy when the surgeon said she would need a general anaesthetic because she has only ever had an operation on her throat :!:

Hi Pam

Hope Charlotte recovers OK, which hospital is she attending?

I can understand her dislike of anaesthetics, after her total ordeals and hope this does not affect her sewing in future, I guess she will be wary for sometime.

Daughters are very precious and when they hurt Mum hurts!! No matter how old they are!
:heart :heart :heart :bearhug :bearhug

Speaking of not for the squeamish, here's the bruise on my leg from where i slipped getting out of the shower the other day - it properly knacked, but wasn't enough to stop me getting on down in the nightclub on Saturday night! :hammertime

Martin,

Must be a man thing that is only a tiny bruise.

Pam,

Looks as though that was painful, hope your daughter Charlotte is ok and not worrying too much about the op even although she has gone through more than her fair share.

My stepson actually kneeled on a needle and it went in his knee. It wasn't until two weeks later that he went to hospital as it was playing up and they found the needle had embedded right into his knee joint - OUCH.

 A tiny bruise??? That's the top of my leg you're looking at there, the bruise is at least 6 inches across - it's ginormous!

Give me something straightforward like a little bit of childbirth or something any day!

Another way is to RING BLOCK the finger at the base, just like dentist, using local, this stuns the nerves, remove said foreign body, wears off in a couple of hours, we try to avoid generals, and as Charlotte has a breathing problem perhaps another method would have been advisable.

Only my opinion

I agree with you, John. Although Pam said they tried a local so maybe the local anaesthetic was a ring block. If the guy is an orthopaedic surgeon I would hope he would know what he is on about. I don't think they would risk a general unless it was necessary.

Hope all goes well, Pam. Give me a placenta to deal with any day. Nails make me feel a little billious. :puke

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Chris, it will be the Royal Infirmary, we got a telephone call this morning to say that they couldn't fit her on a list, so she will have to wait until tomorrow.

John, Charlotte was given some papers to take in, and it states in one section, "Attempts under ring block unsuccessful". She said that a large syringe of nerve blocker was used but she could still feel the tip of her finger!

Verity, that's the word I was looking for yesterday, 'billious', is how I felt when I first heard!

So she has gone to college today armed with pain relief and wearing a sling, so no doubt she will get lots of sympathy. :there

One of the college tutors is very concerned about safety and how it happened. It appears that Charlotte had stopped sewing, and had turned to speak to someone and absent-mindedly pressed the pedal with her foot whilst her finger was in the way :!:

It's worrying to think that come August she will be old enough to learn to drive. :eek

Will let you know tomorrow how it went.

PS Martin, I get bruises easily too, the size is way bigger in relation to the bump.

That is a pity,

I was taught to use a dental syringe many moons ago, you load in the lignocaine cartridge and using a dental needle as it is very thin insert into base of finger you can pull back and then forward in another area waiting of course for the first part to work without removing needle, this means only one actual injection site, less painful and you can get round the complete area easily.

You see we were very nice in the Army Medical Corps, when asked if this was going to hurt, reply was certainly not going to hurt ME.

Hi Pam

So sorry to hear what happened to your daughter.

It must have been a real shock for both of you and extremely painful for her. Hope all goes well tomorrow, will be thinking of you both :there

Will be thinking of your daughter tomorrow and hope that all goes well and she is soon back to her usual self. Poor lass she has had more than her fair share of health problems and is very brave.

Pam

Hope all goes well today and make sure the HRI look after her well.

I hope she has filled in an accident form, no doubt the college will be concerned, litigation springs to mind!!

We are going to hospital at lunchtime today at last!

They are going to attempt to remove the needle by ring block again, (local anaesthetic). I have been told that by leaving it a few days it should be possible, without the need for a general. Charlotte is still taking pain relief but they are knocking her out, and the pain is too much without them, so the sooner it is done the better.

I am feeling billious (great word of Verity's) now, so I don't know how I will feel when they attempt to remove it. I have a phobia about needles in skin anyway, but under the nail as well :!:

I just hope that everything that is going to happen, is out of the way before my holiday in June - I am certainly ready for it!

Poor Charlotte ~ after all those operations to have to have another! This is the one bit about being a parent that is so hard - you would rather go through anything instead of them. Hope that it all goes well and that there is no lasting damage x

Phew! Relief - the needle is out and didn't in the end need a general anaeasthetic. It was done by ring block, I was allowed to watch all the injections then had to leave.

All bandaged up and back for outpatients appointment on Tuesday. Charlotte is happy that it is all over and so am I. She is a bit high on drugs right now - and I have had a G&T and a glass of red wine, and I also feel soooo much better!

Normal life is now resumed!

Now I can catch up on all the posts.

Great news. Glad it is all over now and that there was no need for a GA.

I still feel billious when I think back to Kieran having a ring block to remove his nail as he had psoriasis under it when he was little. I had to get Phil to go in with him and I stood by the door with my fingers laced over my eyes. Kieran never made a murmur, and he was only about six or seven.

Oh dear. I think I need a little lie down now I have recalled that memory.
