Any ideas how to stop the local goat herd eating our plants and trees. For the second year running they have stripped the place clean - except for the fertilizer (posh ayy :roll: ) left as payment :evil:

This year we planted "spiky" plants hoping it would discourage the goats a stop the need for watering; no chance all gone in seconds.

We've blocked off the easy access; the buggers went up and down a stairwell to get in the garden; think they must be able to smell the plants

The local zoo sell lion poo; as a cat deterant; might work; but l don't think easyjet would allow it as hand baggage

Is this the only answer :bbq

Was it the herd of goats or the goat herd that eat your spikey plants.
Just look for a chap with a mouth full of spikes and chase him. It was rather unfair of him to leave his fertiliser on your property.
You could of course invite the hunting lobby in, but some may get upset at that idea.

Or if you are actually allowed, try to fully close any access points.

O/T, but a premiership potter from Brizzle???

Anyway - could you put up an electric fence to control the goats?

Is yours a private property or do you have shared access?

James;
Tend to move around a lot; Brizzle latest stop; but Stokie born and bred. Use Premier Potter at least until the start of next footy season; might not last :celebrate
Will look at the entrance to see if an leci fence is possible; think if l paint it green they would eat this as well

I had goat trouble. We closed the gates and they climbed the wall. :roll:

In the end I told the farmer - but that is easy for me as I live here. Must be a nightmare if you are not here permanently.

You could try speaking with the Muhktar - if you have tried the goat herd and not got any joy. Are you in a village? Apparently they are not allowed to keep farm animals in a village any more but we don't push it as we don't want to be ostracised. Plus our farmer was quite obliging, and the guy who did our garden said the goats had pruned it perfectly.

No tanny that a very bad idea :banghead :banghead . Why don't you just put up some sort of fence up, wire mesh is very cheap to buy. But would not say kill the poor animals, after all they just looking for food. If you was starving, would you do anything for food :?:

Hello Mark,

Possibly, however I doubt the nutritional value of me eating a thorn bush. It would probably cause me great illness. However I may prune it and boil up a nice soup.

Hi Verity;
We are next to a conservation area; as more building takes place the options to feed the goats (and horse's) reduces. A few years ago they roamed unattended; the Muhktar ruled that a shepherd was needed; but the guy is older than the hill's.
Think l need to look for plants that will take a heavy pruning and need lots of feed :pow these things poop by the sackful.
Sure some clever builder will find a way of using the conservation land; think l prefer the goats - makes a wonderful curry

As Verity said, they will climb a wall, but if they got a little 'tingle' then they'd jump back.

Although I'm no longer farming, I still remember how to control livestock ;-)

You could buy a 'system' from an agricultural merchant for about 50GBP

I tried a "little tingle". Hit them with the Executioner - that tennis racquet shaped thing for swatting flies that is battery powered - thinking it may deter them from coming back. They wouldn't budge. :evil: All that I got was a smell of singed goat hair. :roll:

Maybe an electric fence gives a stronger tingle.

Its not a recipe that would get me excited personally, Im not of the veggie persuasion.

Hows about this recipe.

Freshly prepared roast goat on the spit, with a mouthful of apple and a headdressing of a throng of Thorny Spike bushes.

And to encourage sustainable farming, the goat would be executed as required in a humane and hygenic fashion,

every time one wanders into my garden....

Tanny; sounds wonderful to this carnivore; perhaps a little rosemary butter to baste.

James; work collegue suffers the same afflication; he's on the way to the Brit at the moment; mission is to get 7 season tickets and 10 dozen oatcakes.
