anyone know how to avoid that hire car petrol rip-off i.e. when you get the car you get charged about twice the cost of a full tank?

simple... you just dont agree to it.
you tell them, you give me it full, I will bring it back full..

otherwise you dont take the car ..

someone is coming to look at my subaru , which I have for sale , tomorrow.
If they dont take it, I can do you a deal
when do you need a car from ?

I have been looking at car hire for when I come over for a week in June. When looking at the terms and conditions of any company that I have got a quote from, they ALL have in the T & C's that a full tank of fuel must be purchased at the start of the rental from the hire company, and that this will be more than that of the price at the pump because of logistical reasons. Not sure if there is a way around it, but would think that when you get to the airport after pre booking your hire car, it is too late to start arguing about something that you have agreed to.

If there is a company out there offering car hire at a reasonable rate, with insurance all inclusive, including waiver insurance that does not charge for a tank of fuel at the start of the rental I would be interested and would like a quote from them.

I use george and kula for car hire and very new cars as well.I never pay for petrol just return it as given. They take visa number and if you return it empty they then charge. They have never taken a penny of my card.

I have also found them to be very helpful.

:D

Easy rent a car (George & Kula) will let me return the car full - not sure if they would for a new Customer, but worth asking

Hi Mandy

They will as it is same that we use. They just need your visa number as they was getting ripped off as first timers were just leaving car empty and never using them again.

When we first arrived this time last year someone tried to charge us CY£30 for a full tank of petrol in a little Maruti thing when we went to the garage with the fuel light on it cost us CY£20 to fill it up, ever since we always say we will bring it back with whats in it or tell them not to fill it up and we will bring it back empty, if you push them they will generally agree rather than lose a customer. We did walk out of one car hire place on Mr Chicken Street after she tried to charge us CY£40 for a full tank in a Toyota Yaris, we had one the week before and it cost less than CY£30 to fill up, but she got all upset saying that we were calling her a liar, so we along with 2 other couples who waiting to hire a car walked out when she started shouting obsenities in Greek & English at us. Happily we went elsewhere and they have been great ever since http://www.easyrentacarltd.com/ or the shop next door on Poseidonos Avenue in Kato Paphos I can't remember their name but the woman in there is very helpful and very open to negotiation especially if you want it for 5 days or more.

Its the same in the UK at all the airport car rental places, if you look on there counter, it normally tell you:

If you fill it up it will cost you £?.??
If we fill it up it will cost you £?.??

And its always a big difference in the price, its like they're doing you a favour but all it is, is so they don't have to go & refil the car before giving it to another customer, nothing else

The reason they charge you £30 to fill up a car that should only cost £20 is to include them having to go & do it, call it an administration charge, bit like if they delivery a vehicle to you in the UK, you wouldn't get it for free

I've not hired a car since moving here & when we did first come, we went to the hire place on TOKR with friends to collect it, we'd only hired a small car (1.1ltr I think) but once the guy found out that it was our first day living in Cyprus, not holidaying, he upgraded our vehicle without charge, which I thought was very nice of him indeed :D :D

All the big car hire companies in Larnaca airport will charge you for a full tank, and if you bring the car back full, they will refund the money onto your credit card. Saying that... most of the little rental companies do too, it seems to be the norm here.
When i was in UK in Feb, I hired from Avis and had the same thing although petrol is a helluva lot dearer over there, i had such a shock not only price wise, but having to fill up the car myself!!! no little man to wash my windscreen either :|

An even worse rip off is when you have to pay the price of the fill but when they have upgraded you, not at you request telling you about this better car and then take an extra tenner for petrol as it is higher class!! They got me this way, i'll not repeat all the details but they can be found on the other site under car hire horror. Now not able to book through easycar ( the same as easy jet but cars, not to be confused) as they won't hire to me through no fault of my own.

i hired a car back in december after being hit by a cypriot (his fault not mine!! and police agreed) for a couple of days from eurocar ...never again! they charged me a half tank of petrol i thought i will never use that in 2 days but they said no refund if not used........so hey ho i went to see my customers in larnaca and also went to ayia napa to see future customers ....and thought never again! plus insurance would only pay £7 cypriot pounds a day (last year obviously) but i only got simple wee car and thought what a rip off .....UK prices!!! so £28 out of pocket ...was so pleased to see my wee car back.....thanks to chris's garage and his prompt as usual service :D

Ive used elephantrentacar for a long time now (cos Im a big boy) and refer them to renters, weve never had any problems with the petrol issue, or had any negative feedback form customers about them.

If I catch that woman having more keys cut I'll shoot her..

Tricia, is this a wee joke between you and your man. I got my keys cut at the place opposite the municipal car park, down from the police station, and a very good job he did too!

We always used to book our car hire online and more often than not, the local agent was Sixt.

We often used the transfer on the inward journey but took ourselves back to the airport in the hire car - so we collected the car directly from the office on Tombs of the Kings road rather than it being delivered to us at our accommodation.

We never paid for petrol - we always told them we would return the car full with no hassle or argument. We also did the same when we stayed in Limassol - again with Sixt at the Bellmar complex offices (just before Macdonalds if coming from the Old Town).

They take the details of your credit card, so if for any reason you didn't return it full - they would deduct it from the card.

If you take the car when you are in resort, they don't really have that much of an argument. However, it may be more difficult to stand your ground if you are collecting your car at the airport as they have you pretty much over a barrel :( It's not like you can tell them you'll leave it then!

We aleays used to use Elephant Car Rental too. No issue with petrol, if it had a full tank, we returned it with a full tank, if it was emply, we returned it empty.
They always gave us a car one or two classes above what we had hired.
Even though we haven't used them for three years, they always send us an e-Christmas Card, to which we reply, and then get a reply from them, wishing us further Christmas greetings.
Mr. Elephant always acknowledges us at Paphos Airport when we see him. I would reccomend them.
