Pegeia Coalition of Independents Election Campaign Message

We are posting this campaign message on behalf of The Coalition of Independents in Pegeia who are putting up 3 candidates in the coming elections and supporting Marinos Lambrou who is standing for election as mayor on 18th December.
Paphos People are neutral and are not endorsing any candidates. We offer the same opportunity to all candidates.
If you have any questions for The Coalition of Independents, please contact them directly at [email protected]

Coalition of Independents, Peyia

Who are we?
Pegeia Coalition of Independents’ supporters have settled here from many different countries and, not surprisingly, possess a diversity of professional and personal experience. We are a group of like-minded individuals who love living in Cyprus but are aware of the problems that surround us and want to do something about them to help the community at large.
We feel that the most effective way to achieve this is by means of democratically elected representation on the Local Council. In 2006 we created the “Coalition of Independents” to participate in the December 2006 local election. In our very first year we succeeded in getting one of our most active members, Linda Leblanc, a Canadian and Cypriot citizen, elected to Pegeia Council, the first foreign-born citizen and the first woman to achieve this. She was re-elected in December 2011, with a 30% increase in the vote.
Having experienced years of little or no communication, we wanted a representative on Pegeia Council so that we could find out what was going on. Our 10 years’ experience on the Council demonstrates our record of providing timely information about important quality of life issues (town planning, cleanliness, illegalities, public safety, water, taxes and other community services). Some key areas on which we have worked are financial accountability, transparency, voter registration and the public’s right to information. We still have a long way to go.

What we offer:
• A fresh voice calling for open, transparent, representative government
• A long-term commitment to a clean and sustainable community
• Better communication with residents about important Pegeia issues
• Monthly open meetings
• Regular news updates by email

A REAL, CLEAN VOICE AND CHOICE IN THE ELECTION ON 18 DECEMBER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Pegeia Coalition of Independents, News Update, 20 Nov. 2016
The final total for all registered voters in Pegeia for the forth coming election is 2,750, of which 992 are EU and 1758 Cypriot. With a 20% increase for EU voter registration since the last election in 2011, let’s hope we garner sufficient support to elect 2 Councillors and Marinos as Mayor. If so, we could make a real, noticeable difference in Pegeia – which is why we do this.

Our Election Events

1. "Drop In" every Wednesday afternoon, until the election, at the Peyia Tea Rooms, from 3pm to 5pm. Informal, frank discussions with our Coalition candidates and Mayoral Candidate Marinos Lambrou. There is a lovely garden at the back of the Tea Rooms, which we’ll use if the weather is mild. Bring a sweater as it can get chilly, although there are outdoor heaters available. Coffee, teas and homemade snacks provided. At these events, the Coalition would appreciate donations to help to cover the cost. Individuals are welcome to bring their own alcoholic drinks (BYOB). Peyia Tea Room is on the main road just before the centre of Pegeia, on the same street as David and Annick's TIPOTA upholstery shop, Chrysomilo St., opposite Kouvaros Fruit Market.
2. Our Next Monthly Meeting, Monday, 28 Nov., 5pm., Co-op.- Latest Pegeia news, including updates on Vassiliou development, finances & election.
3. Saturday, 3 Dec., Charity Event for Peyia Private Dog Sanctuary, 9am to 1pm, Welcome Inn, Agios Giorgos Road: The Coalition has an election info stand with our 3 candidates, plus Marinos Lambrou.
4. Monday, 12 Dec., 5 pm, Coalition Election Meeting, Petsas Coral Star Restaurant (opp., Philippos Supermarket): All that voters need to know about voting ballots, presentations by our 3 candidates for Council on our aims and accomplishments of 10 yrs on the Council. Snacks provided and drinks are available for purchase from the bar. An ideal occasion to mingle with candidates informally before and after the meeting.

Marinos Lambrou candidate for Mayor
Marinos, who is partly educated in the USA, speaks good English, unlike the current Mayor. Also unlike the current Mayor, he is keen to meet with English-speaking residents. Since so many residents are not registered voters, it can be a time-consuming and ineffective method to knock on doors, as is the usual practice here and in other countries. One idea is to co-ordinate smaller meetings in neighbourhoods or with various special-interest groups, so that Marinos can meet with voters easily. It would help if volunteers organized small groups of people and then Marinos will set appointments. He's also willing to visit individuals at their homes. If anyone has other suggestions or would like to meet with Marinos, we'd like to hear from them. Marinos now has opened his Election Office in Pegeia centre, on Synergatismos Street, opposite the Mill restaurant. He invites voters to drop in to speak with him and his staff. He will be holding an election presentation in English in Dec.
