Hi Folks

This Wednesday we are venturing a little further from Polis/Latchi region to the beautiful, peaceful village of Pano Akourdaleia, which is blessed with a very rich natural environment including many species of flora. As such, the village is a favourite for nature lovers who frequently visit the area to explore the numerous Nature trails/paths that exist there. As an added attraction, there is the opportunity after the walk to visit the Herb Garden nearby. Pano Akourdaelia herb garden, is the base of Heaven on Earth Herbals who supply and sustainably produce cultivated herbs for health. With an onsite herb shop and healthy coffee shop serving gluten free cakes, herb teas, coffee, iced teas and lemonade.

This walk can be described as:

'Mostly on concrete or tarmac surfaces, a little steep down at the beginning and there is a short steep ascent towards the end followed by a roughish unsurfaced track before walking onto a road surface. It's a little steep on way down and some may need sticks; towards the end, steep upwards then levels on stony path then a steep bit before the end.

During the walk, Polis and Chrysochou Bay can be seen in the distance and there is a deep valley and narrow gorge below. The Kyparisha gorge and all its steep sides were severely ravaged by fire around 2006. It is worth visiting the lovely jewel box like Ayia Paraskevi chapel, in the magical setting above the ravine and across the valley can be seen the remains of an old watermill. We follow the river valley and huge rectangular blocks of stone can be seen on the slopes below the crumbling cliffs on the far side. We stop at a viewpoint before taking the track which winds away from the gorge heading towards Kato Akourdaleia with views towards the Paphos Forest and mountains. After passing a smallholding the way twists through shady woodland before reaching a tarmac road and we turn left down into the village. There is a small museum at that junction if anyone wants to take a look (50cents). The road bends round the church and we take the road signposted for Miliou. Along this level road many mature carob trees can be seen scattered in the fields. After passing the village cemetery we will turn right onto a concreted track rising steeply uphill and we then turn left onto an unsurfaced track where the gradient eases. This old track is lined with a variety of trees and shrubs before distant views open out again. Yiolou village can be seen in the mid-distance while hidden directly below is Miliou. We then reach a tarmac road and turn right onto yet another short slope.

As we reach the crest of this final slope there is a sign indicating the Ayios Simeon church. Apparently this is the only one so-named in southern Cyprus and has recently been restored by public subscription'. We then reach the main street, back to the Herb Garden.

Ray describes the walk;

'It's one of our favourite walks taking about 2 hours, finishing at the coffee shop at the Herb Garden, but it's probably just going to be tea or coffee and cakes. The final 20 minutes will be quite a steady climb up, quite steep but on concrete road. It's not too demanding. The tiny church of Ayia Paraskevi in the valley is about 1300 years old I think and well worth seeing. It's usually open'.

Sound interesting!!! If you haven't visited this area before or the herb garden, then this walk is an ideal opportunity to take in the attractions of both.

Come along and join us on Wednesday morning, visit a really picturesque village/herb garden, make some new friends and get a bit of exercise at the same time.

Stay on afterwards and visit the Herb Garden where you can stop for home made drinks and cake and wander around the garden at your leisure. For walkers who enjoy a bit of lunch after the walks, Kathikas is fairly near with many venues to chose from.
