This afternoon I have sat and watched around a dozen of these birds feeding on the many bees that we have in our garden. I had seen a couple over the last week or so, and wondered what they were as they have vivid blue and gold plumage. When they were on the electric wires I could see that they were swooping down low then coming back to the wire with a bee in their beaks, and I realised what I was looking at.

What with them and the birds of prey that have been hovering overhead this afternoon we have had a spectacular display of Cypriot wildlife. All I need to do now is to identify the small birds who visit our garden and who have a beautiful song that almost - but not quite - makes up for the fact that I miss the blackbird.

Those are they JGG. I was off the forum for a week and haven't had chance to catch up on all the posts yet, so I missed that one.

Well, those are the birds that are feeding off the bees on our bottle brush plants, and I have seen Rollers, too. Now I know what they are.

We spotted quite a few of the bee-eaters on our Akamas trip last Fiday, beautiful birds. We saw a number of other birds too which we are attempting to identify at the moment, some of the birds are easily recognisable because we have them in England...possible migratory birds en-route, need to read more on the birds of Cyprus to find out, just purchased my first book this week.

A blue nosed viper also crossed our path...awesome, needless to say we stayed in the car

Jan :)

We are fortunate enough to have numerous blackbirds who claim our back garden as their territory and we have several who entertain us with their songs. One in particular we have christened Pavarotti cos when he let'sgo he is really powerful, really loud.
It's great entertainmemt and best of all, it's free !

Have seen these in the garden myself, but was wondering do we have canaries here? I know sounds a bit off, but there are a pair of birds trying to nest in our pergola and they look like variegated canaries - small thrush like birds but nearly all yellow.

Sorry Marj. You posted it when I shut down my computer for a week. I just hadn't got round to reading over three pages of posts at that time.
