We are off to the North in a couple of weeks and are spending a night along the Panhandle before driving along to Kyrenia for a couple of nights.

Can anyone advise as to which is the best route to take? Should we cross in Nicosia and drive along the coast from Kyrenia, or should we go to Famagusta and cross into the North there? In fact, is there a crossing in the Famagusta region? I seem to recall that there is, but having not ventured that far I am not too sure of my facts.

Any advice and/or directions are more than welcome.

Hi Verity,

If I was going to the panhandle, i personally would cross over at the Ag. Nic crossing (Black Knight Gate) it's about 40 mins from Dhekelia, there are in fact signs from Dhekelia to Famagusta. Once you have crossed the green line, you are only 5 - 10 mins away from the centre of Famagusta, then its just a straight road through Bogaz(i) and onto the panhandle.

Alternatively, you could cross over at Pyla (pergamos) (Beyermadu in Turkish) and get straight onto the motorway along to Famagusta which is about 30 mins drive to the centre of Famagusta.

So glad you posted this Verity. My daughter is out in June for 2 weeks and we were thinking of going to the North. My question is can anyone recommend somewhere to stay?? We would like a nice hotel if possible.

Helen, if you want to stay in Kyrenia I can recommend the Hideaway. I haven't stayed anywhere else yet, but the Hideaway was lovely. There is a website -

http://www.hideawayclub.com/

Thanks for the info Carollynne. I think I saw the signs when I went to Ag Nic. You drive through the barracks and keep going I presume?

You can enter the North by one gate and return by another, can't you?

Yes Verity, you just keep going, go over a roundabout by the bakers and a few shops and then you are at the crossing. Literally only 10 mins from the centre of Famagusta, from there, you see the walled city and signposts are very well marked for Bogaz etc.

Yes, you can come back through any of the other crossings.

:gossip I'm booked in at the "Manolya Hotel" Lapta for a week from 28th May.

http://www.manolyahotel.com/

I booked last November and got 25% discount. He has quoted me in writing (e-mail) a week for two B&B Stirling £157.50.

Will tell you what it was like on return.

I was up there for a day two weeks ago with my friends from Oz and had a look at the hotel. Mehmet the owner was very obliging and showed us various rooms which were available, we 'booked' one there and then.

:celeb2 I'm going the scenic route through Troodos area (longer timewise, but hey I'm retired :celebrate ) and try the entry point, Zodia near Morphou (Turkish name now Guzelyurt).

It has all changed since I was living in Nicosia for two and a half years in 1960 to 63 and worked on Hastings A/C on LXX Sqdn. I did 30,000 miles round a recently independent Cyprus during that tour.

From Kyrenia, East to 'Johns 6 mile beach' is now Accapulco Hotel!!!!!

Ambelia Village is where we stayed in Bellapais. The hotel was in such a lovely setting, right in the mountains and overlooking Kyrenia bay.

I enjoyed Bellapais and am looking forward to going back there, too. There are loads of places to stay, and lots of good reviews.

Hi Verity, try the Sempati at Lapta, it is very good and is advertising £12 per night B&B, bargain ah. A lot of Brits go there and it is very friendly and clean. Have a nice time.......Maggie

We also stayed at the hideaway and loved it.

Was recommended the following by one of the women at work:
Pia-bella
Malpas

We can also recommend the Pia-Bella although it was 9 years ago when we stayed. We went for a two week holiday to the north flying to Istanbul and then Ercan. It was a long journey about 9 hours altogether but it was worth it. We really enjoyed it and got about all over the island. We went up to the pan-handle and decided we were going to stay up there. We did not book anywhere but knew there was a hotel right near the end of the handle. We kept driving and driving and eventually we turned a corner and there it was right on the side of the sea. It was very basic and I mean very basic but we had BB and evening meal plus a couple of drinks during the evening and it cost us £25 for the two of us!! what a bargin. Can't remember the name exactly but it was Blue something.

I felt quite sorry for Ken because he had lived in the north as a child but everything had changed or gone and the part of Famagusta he lived in was now in no-man's land. He had told me about miles and miles of orange trees in Kallapseda but they had all gone. The only recognisable place was a village just outside Nicosia where he described a dry river bed with a bridge and the road bent to the right and it was exactly as he described it. The village was called Ormafeta (not sure of the spelling).

Would like to go back on one of our trips but probably wait until we move out there and have our own car to do it.

Hi Lyn

Ken might be interested in the msn forum http://groups.msn.com/returntovaroshafamagustacyprus - lots of people on there who lived in Varosha as youngsters and went to school there. Lots of pics too :)

I am keeping all of these suggestions.

We are staying at Balci Plaza which is set in the foothills of Karpaz. Don't have a clue where that is, but no doubt we will find it. Then we move on along to Kyrenia for a couple of nights. Maybe Phil and I will take a week and just wander around by ourselves next year. We won't book anywhere and just drop in wherever takes our fancy.
