We live in a rented house and yesterday our electricity suddenly went off . Checked the internal fuse box , no problem there so phoned EAC. Told to go outside ,check if the grey button was out and if it was, press it back in. Tried twice but kept popping back out. Told not to touch it again and get a private electrician. Questioned this and was told ,we supply the electricity ,we don't supply electricians for these things. Is this the case ?

Sorry, but yes.

Behind electrical entry point include a counter, a big fuse and main circuit breaker it's your responsibility to maintain, fix, modify other electrical components of your house.

Same rule for water and phone parts.

Yes, no responsibility for the EAC but the landlord.
You could try giving it a whack with a hammer which is what the EAC told us to do, we did and it worked for another 12 months. In the end though when it went we had it replaced with a better model which I believe was about a 100 euros.

Speak to your landlord.

We had a similar issue last year when we had a lot of bad weather..... our landlord had the electrician out 3 times to go over the property with a fine tooth comb. We didn't pay anything for the visits.

The grey button is the master circuit breaker which pops out if there is a problem with the supply to the house.

It normally means one of two things: either there is an earth leak in the house (maybe a short in the wiring or a faulty appliance), or the breaker is faulty.

With the weather that we have had it could be down to water ingress somewhere.

My suggestion would be to go to the consumer unit (fuse box) in the house and turn everything off (some houses have more than one consumer unit so make sure that you turn everything off). Next go and press the reset button on the master breaker. If it pops straight back out it may well be a faulty unit.

If the button stays in start turning the breakers in the consumer unit back on one at a time and see what happens. If you turn one on and the main breaker pops out then you have found a faulty circuit. Find out what the circuit is (lights, ring main, water heater etc) and that may give you a clue as to what is at fault. If it is the ring main, unplug everything on the circuit and see if it stays on. If it does, start plugging things back in one at a time and, if it pops out again you have probably found your faulty appliance.

If the problem has been caused by water ingress then you may have a fault on more than one circuit, so you may have to do the above more than once.

Obviously you can also get an electrician to do this but bear in mind that if the problem is a faulty appliance of yours then the bill won't be the landlord's responsibility.

PS Yes, what the EAC told you is correct, same as the UK I believe - everything from the meter onwards is your responsibility.

Excellent answer from Band , follow the instructions and you should be ok .

We have the same problem when the rains came last week , I think ours is due to some outside lights , I left that circuit off and will get an electrician to it in the near future .

I agree with band, we did everything he has suggested and it was the main box from the meter.

Maybe the immersion heater has blown, usually the culprit.

Many thanks for the spelling correction. Was only trying to be helpful to somebody asking a question, and was in a rush posting. Would never lower myself to correcting people's spelling as it was obvious to all what I meant.
So Glad your correction was found funny by others at my expense.
Will not bother again. Thanks bye

I'm sorry if you found it was offensive.

It was merely technical correction of EE, not an Englishman.
