During our recent stay at Capital Coast Resort we were curious as to what the story is about the wrecked freighter on rocks out in the bay?
I am sure this will be common knowledge amongst local residents, but we would love
to know it too.
Geoff.

Depends which one you want

The Paphos one in front of the Capital is the MV Demetrios II https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Demetrios_II

The one at Coral Bay / Sea Caves is the Edros III http://cyprus-mail.com/2014/05/18/paphos-ship-wreck-still-stranded/

Many thanks M.A.D. - it is the MV Demetrios II I was interested in.

It was intended that the ship would be removed from the rocks but the court case to decide who was responsible took so long that by the time it was sorted out the ship had welded itself to the rocks making it impossible to remove it.
So it is now used as a dive site, checked by the army on a regular basis to make sure it is safe.

I wouldn't want to miss it. It is part of that coastline now for us. You can see it on my series of sunset pics on another thread here at the bottom left.

Over the years when we arrive my boys always try to see who catches sight of it first!
I didn't realise it went aground only a couple of months before we first visited Cyprus.

It's not so much the ship's 'welded' itself to the rocks it's actually pinnioned, ie impaled on some rocks. I remember when it happened and all the wood came ashore - never have so many locals had new so many new sheds!!

A few years ago a pair of local idiots actually tried to remove the propeller in order to sell it for scrap - have you seen how high it sits out of the water? Needless to say they were caught!

HI Geofferys and anybody else interested
More info about the MV Demetrios where the ship is stranded there is a dive site as previously mentioned the site is called Amphora this is because on the reef that surrounds the ship there are a lot of amphora embedded in amongst the coral where long ago many ships came to an early grave, there is also a fair bit of ammunition both live and empty it is believed that the ammunition got there during the British rule of Cyprus and it was being smuggled into Cyprus for the rebels in their struggle for independence and was either thrown overboard when a British patrol boat was approaching or a smuggler crashed into the reef and sunk along with its cargo.
I have been onboard MV Demetrios a few years ago there was a old rope ladder hanging down one side I managed to climb this onto the deck obliviously there wasn’t much to see all things removable had been striped and the birds had taken over the holds, and the stench was dreadful. The hull is well and truly stuck on the reef you can stand next to the ship in waist high water and it would tear a huge hole if someone tried to pull it off. sometimes in very severe weather it can be seen moving but I doubt it will ever come away. There was also a story that someone tried to get permission to turn it into a casino/nightclub as it was offshore but unfortunately not far enough it is obvious that it is still in Cypriot waters and the question of safety would have been a nightmare.

Note /some of this is local gossip :gossip but some is most certainly fact.

Not long ago I saw a video of the inside taken from a drone flying around that area. It may still be able to be seen on utube.
