The forms to be completed are usually sent out by post early January.
However, it has been reported on another forum that this will not happen this time if your
income for 2014 was below the threshold of €19,500, and that if in 2015 you have exceeded that
you will be expected to visit the tax office and obtain/complete a tax return.
I am wary of fines here however.
Can anyone confirm if the above is true? I'm a bit lazy, if I can avoid a visit to them to check I prefer that, Hi Hi.
If so, then it is very good news for those of us on low fixed incomes below the
threshold.
Geoff.

Sorry Sergio, I do not understand that comment.
Could you kindly clarify?
Thanks,
Geoff.

Geoffreys, I find it difficult to believe the Inland Revenue will not require a tax return according to the circumstances you have quoted. Personally, I prefer to complete one each year, as that is the only way I will receive official notice from the IR in Cyprus that I have "nil to pay". As I don't bother to read the "other forum" you mention, is there any official source where that information supposedly came from?

I did not say, nor did the said other forum poster, that they did not require a completed form.
What was said was they were not going to send out forms to all, in a bid I gather to save money.
Firstly the savings in postage, labour, etc. Secondly it puts the onus on YOU to go in and
declare if you earn over the €19.5 threshold.
I don't know what percentage of residents earn under that, and how many over, but I
would guess (that is all it is!) 50:50.So a good saving to the Revenue Service.
As I happen to earn under it, it is good news for me - if correct info.
I welcome comments - but I would like to know if the info is correct.
Geoff.
P.S. If I have to I will go in and see them, trying to avoid that - the forum is always my first choice.
Incidentally I have sent in completed forms every year for 12 years. So far they have
assessed me up to tax year ended 31/Dec/2008. Always Nil tax to pay.
Me, and others like me, would if this is true represent not just postage etc savings, but
the cost of checking a submitted form when no tax is due anyway!

Id say it may be a slightly flawed report or if its true then maybe not too well thought out - as many people could possibly fall into the special defence contributions taxes pre July 2015 as these were extra over the normal tax threshold of 19500

it would be interesting to know for sure though

Geoffreys, I am surprised you have only been assessed so far until 31st December 2008. I say this, because mine
has been assessed up to December 2013 so far.

When we sold our house in 2013 our Solicitor had to visit the tax office every day to get them to update my tax situation as the house could not be transferred to the new owner until I could prove I had no tax obligations outstanding. They all the years from 2007 until then in one go ( no tax required in any year) and I have not received an assessment since. My income is still below the tax threshold so it is a bit annoying that I have to complete each year when I know there will ( eventually) be a nil assessment.
