Vets here are far cheaper as far as I am aware than in the UK hence I don't know anyone who has pet Insurance over here.

Our pup had some sort of reaction we think to the kennel cough vaccine. I took him down to our Vets as he was constantly coughing with that horrible hacking cough. We had no appointment and just turned up. Neither the Vet or I could get him to cough once there but he was thoroughly examined, given some antibiotics and I was charged just two euros! They gave me a discount on the castration fee because they knew he was a stray that I had taken in and it is not just our Vets but most of the local Vets are so good with the animal charities So even though my pair cost me a bomb with Flea treatments and Scalibur Collars etc it certainly would not have paid me to have insurance for our two to date.

Also I think I'm correct in saying the pet insurance only covers the unexpected. So yearly jabs, and flea stuff are not covered.

A British vet on UK TV said its a waste of money, just like other insurances. I have never claimed on any car or home insurance but like many others have forked out many thousands over the years.
If you are really worried about costs, find out how much the premium is and then put that amount away into a savings account.

Of course most insurance is a waste of money until you actually need it.....we pay €120 for our small dog and it is money well spent for the piece of mind it brings...a few years ago our then dog required surgery of the knees of both front legs (6months apart), the bill came to over €3000......not the kind of money we had laying around....yes vets are relatively cheap in Cyprus for routine stuff...but any major injury/illness will make you dig deep....There are even some idiots around that suggest you "Pay As You Go" with your health insurance...and yes doctors are good value for routine ailments.....but you get anything seriously wrong ( and of course if you are not covered by the State Care System) you would be in deep financial trouble....stupidity....nobody likes to pay insurance....but again for that peace of mind it is worth it.

Of course it would be stupid if one didnt have private health care insurance if not covered by the State system, though I know well off people whos private medical insurance would not cover them and were only told this after the treatment etc had been performed. The Private hospital ended up taking cash, I cant remember the figures but the amount was a lot less than the Insurance companies bill.

€120 is cheaper than I thought it would be. €3000 for the op sounds a lot, but if the vet knows that insurance is involved it wouldn't surprise me that they would inflate their prices over taking cash, 19% Vat for starters.

Yes it was a lot of money...that is why we have insurance....and the operations were not routine and a specialist was needed in order to allow our pet to continue to live his life as he should....the thought that we should have to put a dog down because we could not afford treatment..for us at least is intolerable and if you can't afford to support a pet then perhaps you should not have one...to us they are family members and deserve the same level of care....oh and we are with Atlantic....
