One thing that really annoys me, is hear ex pats doing nothing but moaning about the country we live in, but today i am going to have a moan.

If you had the pleasure of driving along the coast road at about 10am this morning you would have, as myself and Sammia did, have come face to face with a dead man.

Now accidents happen, i know and especially here, but what has outraged me the most is that this poor man was lying in the middle of the road and NOBODY thought to show him some respect and cover his face! not only that, I have been very upset by what i saw (i'll spare you the details)I cant imagine what that sight would do to a child!!

To top it all off the police car that was attending was just strolling along with 2 officers laughing and joking amongst themselves!!!

Curtosy for the pubic and respect for the dead, is that really too much to ask!!

One very angry Lolly

I dont think the police here have much respect for anybody from what I hear.

Sam/Mia/Lolly I do hope you are feeling better after such an awful experience. I have heard that it was a motor bike that had collided with a large wagon. I know its a dreadful sight but for some reason this sort of thing isnt a big deal in CY if ever there is a murder/killing whatever the TV seem to show all the gory details. Strange culture but its theirs. Marj

It's one thing to see tv images, but to see it for real is much more disturbing, not what you expect on a day to day basis.

Hi Lolly

It must have been horrible for you!Hope it doesn't play on your mind too much. Poor chap.

No where near as horrible as what you saw, but the wife and I were in Bar Street Saturday evening (Sunday morning) and it was clear that someone had been seriously injured (bottled, beaten, or stabbed) as identified by the vast amount of blood on the floor. Sadly, the ambulance crew looked lost as to what to do. Infact it was amazing that they made it to the injured party who was surrounded by 200+ gawping people.

As we travelled home we saw another ambulance - obviously going to attend at the scene - do these things have a 'fast'mode? It seemed as if it was almost going in reverse!

The evening was topped off by friends witnessing 30+ cyps chasing 2 brits (probably scally's) through bar street with the sole intentention of 'dishing some out'.

It seems that, as far as Bar Steet is concerned, it has finally adopted the UK mentality of lets get hammered and then go and do dome people over. Shame.

 Shocking stuff.

Re the incidents on Bar Street, I used to go out there regularly and never saw a scrap of trouble, but have been hearing more and more stories about this kind of incident lately - seems to be on a bit of a downward spiral.... :(

With your support and the rest of Paphos of course, my company services should be on the road very soon.

We will not be able to save everyone, however those that are breathing when we arrive will be given every chance to reach hospital that way, for those that are not, they will still be treated exactly the same way as those that are.

I have 2 vehicles ready for the road, now I need people to sign up so that I can pay the crews to man them.

It was not a nice thing to see and it really shook me up, Lollypop was behind me in her car so we both saw it. The mans head was under a lorry wheel.

With regard to the incident in bar street, we too were there and lollypop was the one helping the man until the ambulance got there.... :congrats to her.

Lordy Sammia and Lolly what a weekend you've had. You must have passed the accident at the wrong time cos I read on another site that they did close TOTK Rd and had diversions in place.

Sounds like you got there just after it had happened. There is always going to be a time lapse before the body can be covered up or the road closed which is unfortunate for those passing but there is no justification for the laughing policemen.

What an awful experience for those who saw this incident it must have been very traumatic and so sad for the man and his family.

It does highlight the need for properly equipped ambulances and Paramedics to attend both the living or deceased and respect given, anyones life is worth that much.

I am in full support for Paramed his ambulances and fully qualified Paramedics whom I met at the Dog show. I would seriously ask most people to consider this valuable service which I add could save your life one day. The ambulance service in Cyprus is woeful at best a truck on wheels with little equipment and the attendants have no training what so ever, not their fault.

John is showing the way forward on this one and is being supported by one of the local private hospitals who recognise the need in Paphos for this nesessary service.

The annual fee is very resonable for peace of mind and there is a facility in place for people who are swallows and can pay for cover while they are here in Cyprus. I would recommend all members to check Parameds policy and consider it for themselves, you never know.

Jan :)

This road is so bad for accidents as has been said lots of times before.
Only this evening we were coming along the coast road from work around 6pm and there was yet another smashed up car with glass all over the road but we did'nt see anyone hurt.
We travel this road every day and I could'nt even count how many accident aftermaths we've see, thankfully never one as bad as the one
Lolly saw.

I have just heard that the man who was killed was the grandfather of one of my colleagues.

We feel very sad for her and her family.

Thanks Sam for the :congrats

Seems we just attract blood and guts!! Ironic that someone should mention that on this post!

How long did it take for the ambulance to arrive?!?! and as was said there were 200+ gawpers!!!!

Hate to blow my own trumpet but on this occasion i will. I sat outside a bar and watched as his 'friends' stood and stared as he lost copius amounts of blood. I promised myself that on, this, my first night out in cyp i wouldnt get involved, but wouldnt that make me just as bad as the 200+????

Myself and another of our friends literally held his head together to stem the bleeding for nearly 45 minutes. I was unaware at the time that the police were there, they hadnt even approached the man!

I'm sure it was nearlly an hour before the ambulance arrived and then there was only one paramedic and no technition! We had to help him to get the man into the ambulance! god only knows who was stopping the bleeding while he was driving!

ok....enough :soap :rant :tickedoff

They DO NOT have Paramedics on the Ambulances, hence the reason for my previous posts and discussions with the Health Ministry that they should be registered.

This is what I put earlier

My apologies paramed, but you understand my point?

As and when i can afford too, i will be securing my families health and safety with your services. Untill then if there is anything i can do to help please PM me.

I have Event management/fundraising experience ( I worked for Marriott in the UK and have raised funds and awareness for Abuse survivors and the FULL STOP campaign) and would be happy to support your organisation.

I was not critising you, just want to make sure that those that do not know the system don't get the wrong impression.

I know there is a lot of support from people and only wish I could do this for free, be great if an Insurance company or similar would cover the costs.

As soon as you get here call round, I never refuse an offer of assistance.

Afternoon Pete,

Please check out houstonmedicalltd.com which is on the signature all information and subscription form can be found there.

€35 per month per household

I want to put at least one Ambulance with 3 F/T crews on shift, I will float as required on shifts when in Paphos for my 3 weeks off.

Now paying the minimum to each crew at the beginning would mean a monthly cost of €3,500, this does not include fuel, oil, replacing med stock etc, so if I can get 100 household to register we have a go.

Obviously the more the merrier, there would be no further charges to those registered, as you can see there is no profit, however I would expect to break even at least, any extra would then go into buying more vehicles, such as PTS with wheelchair lift, offering trips to folk that find it difficult on coach tours, plus a qualified crew.

I certainly hope so, I want the service on the road ASAP, plenty of interest at the Hot Dog show, however interest and signing up are entirely different.

I certainly did not want to rake up the past however.

There was one sour note when my crew were questioned by a couple about the owner of HM and they said albeit third hand rumour that I had run off with 3 ambulances and C£30,000 from a previous venture that never reached the streets, those of you that know me and my determination to get this going will also know that is completely false.

I should not have to prove myself, however these rumours could be the difference between people signing up or not, all money has been invested in HM by myself I have no business partners, nothing has been borrowed, stolen, invested by others, loaned from banks, found on the streets, so the bottom line is I am the only one to lose.

HM income at this time comes from what I earn Offshore, add to that an insurance settlement when my wife Pam passed away, that I am using in a way I feel sure she would agree to, she was certainly behind me in all I have tried to achieve.

Now anyone that would like to visit our office is welcome to do so and inspect any paperwork, invoices, bills, payments they wish.

I doubt anyone on here would need any of that but thank you for offering it anyway, just remember one thing tho, rumours are exactly that rumours  they're put out there to put people off something thats better than what they already have imo :D

Kismet,

Just when I mentioned needing a company or similar to assist, out of the blue comes an e mail from Greece from ******, enquiring if we can supply Ambulance transfers and various other services.

I have just spoken to the person in charge and discussions, meetings will be taking place within next 2 weeks, B----y Great.

This is great news John I knew it would come because there is a need for your service and what's in place is not sufficient.
Hopefully recognition at last.

Will e-mail you at some point in the future to discuss our requirements.

Look forward to that Jan,

I will be in Glagow 20-27 May, just a little trip to Aberdeen in there as well so they can turn me upside down a few times in a helicopter in the environmental pool, need to do the survival refresher before 6 June.

Well done John.

I can't believe that I have only just "got" that the ambulances over there, well - aren't! Thank you for highlighting this to us all. Sorry to sound even more dense, but what happens if somebody has an accident out there - who do they call? or does everyone just take their chances?

Will there be breakaway rates for those just coming out on holiday?

Is there anything that the rest of us (here in Blighty) can do to raise funds or awareness?

Dawn,

They do have Ambulances, however the equipment is not standard on any of them, and the crews are not trained to deal with the type of accidents discussed earlier, not their fault either, that is the system.

Most people would call the Police number 199/112 then you are put through to General Hospital, eventually you may see an Ambulance, there are many reports of them not finding places and of course taking an hour to reach the scene.

You may also call a private hospital if registered, each have a vehicle, it works this way, find the driver, collect/find doctor get to scene, again delays.

When we have enough homes registered to put an Ambulance on the road, each crew while on shift will be to-gether and available to dispatch immediately, you will be given a card with phone number, check out the web site for all the information you need.

I would appreciate any help, however this is not a charity and I will not accept donations of money for any reason, I will pm you with the reasons for that statement.

Keep on keeping on, John. There will be a breakgthrough for your service one day and hopefully it will be sooner rather than later. Maybe EU directives will help push it forward.

In fairness to the police here I get the impression that they don't get too much in the way of training or support. It must have been distressing to see the officers laughing, but sometimes laughter covers embarrassment, nerves and fear. They may be in uniform, but they are only human, and if they don't have adequate training and support what Lolly, Sam and Mia saw is the outcome. It is a response to a situation.

It doesn't make it right, but maybe they were badly affected by what they saw and were ill equiped to deal with it, rather than being the callous cops that they appeared to be. Just a thought. Things are not always as they seem. If you can consider this as a possibility Lolly maybe it will make you feel a little less angry. I hope you are recovering from this traumatic experience.

My sympathy also goes to the poor man's family and friends.
