Hi folks, Happy New Year.

The second week of January is said to be the most depressing time of the year. After the Christmas/New year celebrations I have just the boost you need to get 2016 rolling. Why don't you make one of your new year resolutions to walk with us on a regular weekly basis. Meet new friends, see new and exciting areas of Cyprus and get a bit of healthy exercise at the same time at very little cost. Only your petrol and lunch money!!!!!! So lets make our own sunshine, come on Wednesday and check it out.

For this Wednesdays walk, the first one for 2016, we are visiting the beautiful mountain village of Lysos .

If you travel for about ten minutes from Polis on the E733, you will arrive at the beautiful mountain village of Lysos. Alternatively, if you're coming from Paphos along the B7, Lysos is about 36 kilometres away. At an altitude of 647 metres, the views down to Chrysochous Bay and the disused Limni mines are unobstructed. The northwest of the village connects to the village of Pelathousa and if you were to travel northeast, you would come to Stavros tis Psokas, the Kykkos Monastery and eventually the mountain resorts of Troodos.

There are two versions of how Lysos came to be named. One theory is that it was the name of an ancient Greek settlement in Asia Minor and when the settlers moved to Cyprus, so did the name. Lisos or Lissos was also the name of an ancient city in Crete. The other theory is that the name comes from the verb ‘lyo’ (liono – to melt). In bygone days, metals were melted in Lysos because of its abundant water supply and also because of the copper-bearing deposits in the area of Troodos' west side.

In Lysos’ main square is the 15th century church of Panagia Chryseleousa, which combines Byzantine and Gothic elements with a dome and arches. Over the years various alterations to the building have taken place. At the beginning of the 17th century the gothic-style window of the Sanctuary's apse was walled up and a niche created in its place. At the beginning of the 20th century the church was expanded to better serve the needs of the community.

Our walk starts from the Paradiso Hills Hotel and takes in the abandoned Turkish Cypriot village of Melandra. Prior to 1974, the village was inhabited by Turkish Cypriots but was completely destroyed, apparently by shelling. Deserted after the conflict in 1974 and the only inhabitants are now goats, sheep and pigs, tended by local farmers. The only two buildings that were not touched are the mosque and the orthodox chapel. Our leaders Christine and Richard inform me there is 'just one hill to climb - no problem for us now'.

After the walk there is an opportunity to visit 'The Spice House' in Peristerona, where you can find your favourite herb and spice blends, single spices, wellness powders and superfoods as well as essential oil blends and more for your health and wellness. Lets go and sample, shop, relax and enjoy some of the best views Cyprus has to offer, its a must visit.

As you can see, the Lysos area has a lot to offer, so why don't you come along on Wednesday and spend the day with us walking in the morning and then moving on to the Spice House for a drink and check out their products.

Put us in your diary for a memorable day out in this fabulous village, not forgetting free exercise and some social networking with other walkers.
