Post subject:  Village that offers something for everyone-Wednesday 2 Dec

Hi Folks

This Wednesday's walk showcases one of the most attractive villages in the area, built of stone, set on top of the low hills of the Laona plateau. Set in a patchwork of vineyards, it still retains all the charm of a true Cypriot village with its old stone buildings, narrow streets and ancient church.

Famous for its vineyards, the village is surrounded by vines and is renowned for the quality of its grapes. It has two wineries, the Sterna winery with a large selection of wines or the Vasilikon winery, which only offers a white and a red wine plus a limited edition special red.

Being 22kms from Pafos and 14kms from Latchi, this village has a long history as a resting place for merchants travelling with their animals, getting some refreshments at the old inn which existed at the time between the two towns. Around the village area today there are many excellent restaurants, Petradaki, The Farmyard, Yianni's and Imogens to name but a few where you can sample both authentic Greek food and local wines alongside a more international menu.

I think I have now given the game away with the above clues. Of course, it's Kathikas.

Sheila describes her walk thus:

'A pretty 5 mile circuit of the Kathikas vineyards. A few ups and downs on good earth tracks with a bit of concrete. Panoramic views of the Troodos and the Polis coastline.
Setting off from Chrysospiliotisa Church we encounter two notable features before the walk
proper :

First the cave shrine where the linobambakinoi used to worship. The linobambakinoi (literally ‘flax cottons’) were Latin or Orthodox Christians who decided to ‘blow with the wind’ when the Ottoman Turks took over the island in the 16th century. Posing as converts to Islam they saved themselves from punitive taxes and perhaps worse. But in secret they held to their traditional beliefs. Their survival strategy included such ruses as giving their children names which are common to both Christian and Moslem faiths, such as Abraham (Ibrahim) Moses (Moussa) and Joseph (Yusef).
The cave shrine with its dark and sooty walls is still in use today and it is not unusual to find the faint light from a candle or oil lamp flickering across the altar.
After leaving the shrine we can visit one of the caves where the linobambakinoi families hid in times of trouble. The ceiling and walls are blackened with centuries of smoke from cooking fires.
After inspecting these points of interest we take a right up a gentle trail which soon levels out to give a good view of the patchwork of vineyards below. Following similar terrain for the most part we follow an undulating figure of eight with gradually unfolding views.
Soon we reach the main Kathikas-Arkoudalia road and after a few yards of tarmac we begin our return leg encountering a fairly steep concrete descent – sticks would be useful here.
Then a little more incline before joining a good wide level path with fantastic coastal views towards Polis, descending to join our outward trail and passing the cave on our way back to the church'.

You have probably tasted some of what Kathikas has to offer by way of wine and food. Why don't you come with us on Wednesday walking with Sheila and David, to discover what else the surrounding area has to offer.
Lots of exercise, networking with the other walkers and an amazing area to visit. What more could you want, something for everyone!!!!!!

Refreshments afterwards will be taken at Fytos Souvlaki tavern at the junction with the Pafos/Kathikas road.
