Why Greeks are exhuming their parents

Cemeteries in Greek cities are so overcrowded that bodies are often only kept in the ground for three years. Then families have to pay for exhumation - and for the bones to be kept in a building known as an ossuary. But many cannot afford to pay even for this limited degree of dignity in death.
How long before this fully affects Cyprus? I know that nearly all the cemeteries are already full

Why wont the Church bite the bullet and allow Cyprus to have a crematorium?

Why wont they get out of the 19th century and at least enter the 20th?

It would surely be so easy to make this a more dignified affair? Yes they know it must happen (given their current beliefs about burials rather than cremations) but the remains and the belongings of the person could be handled with a little bit more sensitivity !!

Ossuarys have been used here in the past, and are quite common elsewhere in the world. Frankly, I don't care where my bones end up as I won't be around to worry. I wouldn't want my kids to have to pay for me to be dug up though as it seems a bit unfair.

Spot on Paul, I've told my kids to not even think about flying me back to uk, and just take the simplest, most hassle-free and cheapest option. I have no concerns about the hereafter, it will be beyond my control!

I am not a religious person so I see things from a scientific and practical point of view, when you are dead all that is YOU leaves the body, what is left is just a carcas which sort of looks like someone. I dont see spending a kings ransom on a coffin and a space in a cemetary and funeral directors fees viable. I hope no one wastes loads of money on me when I pass on, would prefer they spend it on a better life style. so how practical is burial at sea ?

I was thinking of burial at sea, but I can't swim. But I have checked out the green bin outside our block and I will fit in fairly easily.
