Now the dust has settled and normality has returned (well, nearly), it's time to have fun threads again.

So come on, what in your view is the best guitar solo ever? You have to include a youtube clip so we can all see and decide if we agree.

One of my favorites is https://youtu.be/_oy5792Fc5o , but I have weird tastes.

Well I'd nominate Hank Marvin and 'Apache'. Very old video, so not such good quality, but the gittar pickin's good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB91ayDlQLE

Pushing my luck here (hardly a solo): Mark Knopfler + Chet Atkins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CExqCRNFt6o&index=5&list=PL0ChtSdBOmXG8hN9q6WTA6KqoAa83evOc

No doubt Hank was good, but he could never match Brian May!

Didn't know Frank Zappa, but that was good. I'd struggle to choose between Marvin and May, love them both. The ultimate tho for me is always John Williams

So brilliant for the film.

It's obvious that this is going to depend on the genre of music that you're in to. If it's classical guitar, then there really is no one to touch Segovia.

Such a subjective topic - I'd battle to choose just one in all honesty as it depends on my mood (and memory), but here's one that I just love for the sheer showmanship (plus I didn't realise he was so good)! Solo starts at about 3:27 but it's worth watching the whole thing anyway IMHO.

Very much depends upon my mood as to the type of music and guitar style I listen to. For me Carlos Santana for some incredible freeflowing singing guitar solos. Have seen him live a few times (not recently) and on each occassion the solo changed somewhat but was magnificent.

Saw John Williams in Japan when he played with Sky, an incredible precision musical experience.

I also love May, some old Floyd and many others.

For action guitar the solo at the end of Freebird https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr3dWscslo8 and sheer headbanging excitment of much of the original HM greats is difficult to beat.

Its also so good to hear real music (with its flaws and perfections) played live.

The 2 songs that irrespective of my mood allow me to close my eyes and solve anything are Samba Pa Ti (above) and Europa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIZhh5LIE3U

Having no words means I can create my own words and or feelings as the song progresses.

So glad to be able to start posting on PP again. Well done Neil and for swinging your axe.

There are some great submissions here, but some of them are great only because of their catchiness. As far as the difficulty and complexity of a guitar solo is concerned though, you would be pushed find anyone better than Jimi Hendrix. He made his guitar sing, and I've yet to hear anyone copy him. Here he is playing Voodoo Child:

Gotta be: Dave Edmunds....Sabre Dance or the late great Rory Gallagher Going to my Home Town...which technically is a mandolin but brilliant nevertheless.

Some great clips chaps. I also had no idea Prince was that good. Rory Gallagher of course. I remember seeing him in his band Taste at the 1st Bath festival.

Keep em coming.
