A friend of mine who is 74yrs old has to return to UK either Manchester or Birmingham on Sunday for the funeral of her Mother who has died at the age of 94yrs. Friend is having real probs. trying to find a reasonably priced flight. She has trawled as many flight sites as she can think of but having no luck. Does anyone have suggestions for possible cheap flights. Thx in advance.

Though I can't help you in your quest per se, we had the same problem last year when I had to go to my mother-in-law's funeral in the UK.

Airlines know that passengers wishing to book a flight within 2-3 days of departure are a captive market and capitalise on it. Plus of course, they may not have many seats left, so can get away with charging a premium.

I've tried the usual, Skyscanner and Travel Supermarket etc but didn't find anything for Sunday - I even tried a day or two earlier and still nothing.

Will try again later to see if I can see anything.

You can fly Lufthansa from Larnaca to Birmingham for £175, but it means changing planes in Munich!

You can even have Turkish Airlines from Nicosia to Manchester via Turkey for £217!

Both are one way though

Ryanair ans easyjet do sell standby tcx at PFO. They are not cheap and you are not guaranteed getting a seat but worth a try. Emergency travel like this is always an issue and airline companies love it.....

Have you tried Monarch, Thomas Cook & Thompson - as holiday companies rather than 'airlines' they often sell remaining seats a bit cheaper rather than leaving empty.

Flights have been incredibly busy recently, especially since most of the charter flights ended at the beginning of the month. I wanted to return to Newcastle on Sunday and couldn't get a flight at any price so I am flying to Edinburgh this evening. Please don't leave it too long before booking.

A lot of people who were due to go to Sharm el Sheikh have come here instead so, presumably, charter flights are still running.

easyJet fly on Saturday evening into Liverpool from Larnaca.
Flight prices are generally cheaper than Manchester from Paphos - it's a route we've travelled a few times since November 2013

We stay overnight at the airport hotel (literally across the road when you exit the airport arrivals): Hampton by Hilton and the price includes a reasonable breakfast (cooked) after 06:30am and continental from 04:30am. We found the cheapest price this time with Holiday Extras but have booked in the past with Booking.com, Hilton website direct and TravelRepublic.co.uk

The airport and the hotel are just a few minutes by taxi or bus (15mins max by bus) from Liverpool South Parkway train station which can take you to Lime Street interchange or onwards through Preston. We book train tickets with thetrainline.com and you will get a cheaper ticket if booked at least 24 hours in advance for an open return if you don't want to be tied to a particular train on the way back. Trains go into Manchester from Liverpool.
