Some advice please PP..

We had our new home registered with the electricity on 24th Aug and flew back to the UK on the same day... We left the fridge on and the pool running 2 hours per day.

Today I received a bill for 65 euros.. Does that sound right for 3 weeks worth of electricity for an empty property?

Thanks in advance..
Kelly

We don't know what max rating the fridge or freezer is or the size of your pool pump.

Although it seems a lot, perhaps you could post your bill for us to see.

so that equates to 10 units a day - thats a lot for a pump and a fridge freezer - -

we have a large pool and it uses approx 1.5 units per hr when the pump is running. so if its ont for 2hrs per day = 3 units a day for the pump - id be guessing on the fridge freezer - is it empty or does the fridge freezer for products in it...

its still way too much id say

It does seem high but could other things have need left on by accident

eg Pool light the old style ones use 300W (suggest change to LED @ 15W much nicer light too)
Water pump
Security lights
TV's etc on standby etc.

The other question is do you have outside sockets or are you on a complex? Could others be using your electric. Unfortunately you need to be in living in the house to be sure. Some experience with a digital test meter is useful.

So sorry on the info supplied tis all rather inconclusive.

Thank you both for your replies.

Having looked at the bill again it was for a total of 12 days. Electricity was transferred to me on 24 th Aug and the bill was generated on the 4 th sep.

There was a few things left in the fridge and it's pretty new, LG Eco and pump for 2 hours per day. We pulled all other plugs from the wall and returned to Cyprus on 6th Sep. no pool lights, security lights ect.. And we're alone, not on a complex, so no one could be using our electric supply.

The other point, is that the bill is normally sent every two months? Is it normal to be sent a bill after just 10 days?

I'm really not convinced that the bill is right, we had literally signed the electricity over then went to the airport!
Thank you both once again.
K

Just checked my most recent bill and notice you are paying a monthly bill. I have always been on Tariff 5 and paid every two months. I live here full time - here is a breakdown of my most recent bill.

Analysis for the period 03/06/2015 - 04/08/2015

TARIFF O5 (with basic fuel price €300/M.T.)
Fixed Charge €2.35
120kWh @ €0.1371
134 kWh @ €0.1453

Total Units used 254

Amount paid €46.22

Just a few random comments ...

We can only see half of your bill, but you seem to have one of those complicated iThings, so not sure how you get to show us all of it! ;) ;) ;)

Bills are every two months on the same date, that's probably why it's only for a short time.
It *may* be an estimated bill. Is there an E next to the current meter reading (which we can't see on your post)

It is possible to get the bill in English you know!

Can you post a better bill??

As you have only recently been connected the next bill should be every two months. Seems to be expensive compared with our bill.

Could the meter have been mis-read.

the other thing is as you can see from the units and tariffs applied, because its part way through a billing period the allowances per unit tariff are pro rata'd on the number of days within the billing period, which serves to make the bill seem more expensive than one would initially expect until you understand how the billing and its cycle works - my question would be how can someone use 216 units of elec in 12 days if all there was was a pump for the pool on for 2hrs and a fridge /freezer running 24/7.

for example we use about 13-15units per day with our pool pump on 4 hrs per day (approx 6units on its own), a large fridge freezer, three 18ins fans running most of the day, using a little AC overnight (approx 2-3hrs), and the usual laptops, tv and night-time (power-savers) lighting, circular halogen oven and the washing machine running once per day..

definitely needs investigating

Much better, but it's all still Greek to me!!! :crylaughin

It's not an estimated bill.
Are you certain that the original reading is right?
You are on Tariff 05, same as us and someone else who posted.

edit - are you sure that the pool pump is only running 2 hours??

Are you sure the meter reading when you moved in was correct, otherwise you could be being billed for some of the previous occupier's use?

I am thinking that this bill only covers 10-11 days 24/08 to 04/09

and 216 units in that period equating to over 20 units a day something is clearly wrong.

i agree with the previous comments recheck the meter readings start and finish

I agree with twister re start reading, is it correct. I would start taking readings daily, then weekly from now on to get a better picture of consumption.

Good post by flamingo regarding taking meter readings - I make a note of ours every two weeks and also on the day I anticipate the meter to be read by AIK and then compare it on the actual bill when it is emailed to me.

Likewise with the water meter as even though it is included in our rent it's still my responsibility to make sure we keep within a reasonable limit

I can't comment as to why you appear to have used so much electricity in such a short period other than it needs investigating before you get a truely horrendous bill.

The are a few 'anomalies' on the actual bill, however, that make it appear expensive. Firstly, there is a one-off charge of €15 for the transfer of names and a €1 fee for doing something with the paperwork. You won't get that on the next bill.

However, I cannot understand why you have been billed across the full spectrum of charges for tariff 05. You've used 216 units in the period. The first 120 units should be charged at €0.1371 and the remaining 96 units at €0.1453 - no other tariff charges should have been applied. I'd seek an explanation from EAC.

Based upon this (and deducting the one-off charge) this bill would have normally equated to €38.65

its because its a part period thus you only get pro rate allowance at the appropriate tariffs.... a % of the first 120 and a % of the next 200 and so on, note that you will get the full compliment of the lower tariffs spread in your next full period bill...

could someone be using your elec - is there an outdoor connection that isnt locked

That's a plausible explanation I hadn't considered. However, if that is the case then you'd expect the pro-rata rate to be a constant across all the tariff bands - it isn't, especially the standing charge. But you never know - anything is possible with EAC.

A few years back we got a ridiculously high electricity bill which we traced back to the freezer which had been occidentally left on fast freeze following a power cut.

If your fridge freezer is on high (colder inside) then that can easily result in very high bills.

the first three tariffs percentages are spot on but it goes wrong with the block of 90 units and the final block of 36.... as these should be 25 and 101 but the way it is is cheaper for you so there ye go....lol

why who knows?

good luck in investigating this
