Hi All,

We know a lot of us in Cyprus have a Nationwide account because of the lack of charges. But if you use the account for on line transactions as we sometimes do, you now need a card reader. We tried to make a payment tonight and could not because of a lack of a card reader. The message they sent us though said don't worry we will tell you when, expect your reader before end of May. Now find can't do any on line transfers with still a month to go at least before reader gets here if it does.
Have e mailed them will let you know of any response.

Hi All,

We did say we would get back to you when we received a reply from Nationwide. Well we should already have received a card reader so they are now going to send another. They will not reinstate internet banking until you receive a reader. No more shopping on the net for a while :(
It has been Easter and May day holiday's so perhaps when the mail will start trickling through, but we may end up with two machines :? .
Let you know how we get on.

I have the opposite problem - I have the card reader but not my new cards yet and my old cards (which haven't expired yet) will not work with the card reader. I have spoken to Nationwide and my new cards are on the way.

Just to clarify though - the card readers are only for use when making payments to someone via the Nationwide internet banking. You don't need them for shopping anywhere on line - they are purely for Nationwide internet banking.

Another useful tip that they told me when I spoke to them - if you have more than one account and have received your new card for one of them - you can use that with the card reader even if it isn't that account that you are making the payment from. It is simply to verify your identity and all your accounts are linked to one customer number which is what they use to identify you

I got my new card recently but no card reader.

As luck would have it I'm in the UK at the moment and when I popped into the local nationwide branch they gave me two readers.

The girl gave me two readers because as I'm living in Cyprus it could be difficult to get one to me and I'll have a spare in case one doesn't work.

I haven't tried them yet but assume they work ok

This a new bit of information for me. Can anyone elaborate on this, can you use the card as a switch card in shops etc and not pay charges? and can you get money out of CY ATM's with no charges also? Sorry to sound dense but I have not heard of this before.

Would you advise we open nationwide account here then before we move?

Nationwide does not make charges to withdraw money from overseas ATM's ~ they also seem to give a very decent rate of exchange compared to banks and often the sea front money kiosks.

Should you open a account before you move ~ absolutely if you are having money paid into a UK account and you intend withdrawing it in Cyprus then Nationwide is by far the best option .

I was in the UK last week and picked up a couple of card readers - got home early hours today and mine is here! Gonna keep one as a spare, but if anybody needs a reader, give me a shout and it's yours.

Still not received our card reader or should we say readers as they should have sent us a 2nd one as we did not receive the 1st. Do you still have that spare reader Jean  Really finding it difficult making payments back to the UK. Had to post a cheque back to the UK last week. Did not even remember how to write one
Let's hope the post picks up been a bit delayed lately we find in Tala.

What about getting a pre paid credit card?

http://www.thetimesprepaid.co.uk/

I think you can just load money on to it when doing an on line transaction without the need for a card reader.

http://www.moneysupermarket.com has a comparison table for the various prepaid cards, can be useful.
