Post subject:  Logs ( wooden Type )

Hi Guys

I know some smart person would offer logs of the 4 legged type , so being specific .

Can anyone advise a source to buy logs ( not Pine ) , and how much per load or quantity .

I appreciate location may have an effect to the price , but an idea for when we call would be a help

Many thanks

Les

Best person is Irene. Her logs are well-cured and consist mainly of carob (the best), lemon, olive and other hardwoods. We've been buying off her for years and recommended her to countless people who've all been pleased. You get a full truckload too for your money, which you don't always with others. Tell her what size logs you want and she'll oblige. She's based in Emba, so I would have thought Theletra would be do-able. Call her on 99 187882. She's always very fair on price, may be about €120 for a twincab truck load. During the summer months she will sms you with out-of-season offers. Others may be a little cheaper, but trust me, I've tried loads of suppliers over the years and will now only buy from Irene. Lloyd

Can only second all Lloyd says, we have tried others but Irene is the best for quality and service.

I also agree and she certainly used to deliver to Kathikas when we lived there so can't see Theletra being a problem for her

Post subject:  Re: Logs ( wooden Type )

Pallets are made of pine. Taken from another forum where the same topic is being discussed:

Take it from a professional chimney sweep DO NOT BURN PINE!!! it creates a sticky tar like substance and can lead to a blocked flue and or a chimney fire. Dave 99819137

Another poster commented:

I remember when we were given a nice load of pine offcuts which my husband cut into stove size bits and we thought ......lovely ....free firewood for the winter. One chilly Winter evening we had a lovely blazing fire made up of the pine but next morning our white stone chippings, both balcony's and our pool were absolutely covered in this sticky goo. Worse still our neighbours large pool and tiled area was also covered in it. The removal and clean up took us 3 days........fortunately our neighbour was in UK so we were able to restore it to its former state. So I agree DO NOT BURN PINE.

You burn pine or pallets at your peril. It's a false economy.

You don't have to pay as much for a twin-cab load of hardwood logs.

we buy Irene
a wood burner needs hard wood, olive, carob, lemon, almond not soft wood pine
Irene gives you great quality hard wood for wood burners at great prices
hard wood that does not soot up your flu

No you don't, but the people who appear superficially cheaper don't give you the same generous volume as Irene does. So you don't make the saving that you think you are. If you buy from Irene out of season (like I did) you can get the same amount for around €90.

Hi Guys

Well thanks for all the constructive comments , and the point made about Pine Wood , frankly I had no idea , so thanks for pointing out such a critical point , could save many of us a nasty surprise or even a fire .

Seems also the consensus is that although maybe a little higher in the price band ( and I hasten to add not much ) , Irene seems to have the vote of the majority as the best supplier .
we have spoken with her and will be using her from now on .

Thanks to all that contributed

Going back to last winter I genuinely can't remember, sorry. Can only repeat that while some suupliers appear superficially cheaper, in terms of value for money, I believe Irene to be the best.

Irene is the best, known her and Frixos for years but only recently got a log burner so of course we used her - the bags of logs sold at kiosks and DIY shops resemble sponges and are usually imported from Bulgaria and burn far too quickly!

She is also one of only 3 suppliers who bothered to apply for a license from the Forestry Dept to do this line of work so her stock is the real deal and genuine!

Not sure how much profit you think there is to shave off TG, but after VAT is paid on (say) €120, then fuel to deliver to your home (heavily-laden truck) and back, then buy the wood in from their suppliers, there's not a lot left to be made as profit. I suspect €30-€40 for one to two hours labour. I've tried all, or most of the log suppliers with minimal variation on price...and Irene comes tops for me.

Hi Yakflyer,
Given the price you quoted for her 'summer offer', there certainly seems a sizeable leeway for reduction with profit!

I really struggle with this desire to shave a pittance off a fair price for a quality product and first class service.

I called Irene Saturday lunchtime - she delivered at 5pm - the wood is top notch and ready to use - cannot fault the product or service - you get what you pay for!!

Well Judge if you call 30-40+ euros "a pittance", what do you consider a worthwhile reduction that would grab your attention?

Having lived here for 9 years I know the value of once finding a quality supplier sticking with them - shopping around is costly in terms of time, petrol and phone calls - once you factor all the costs into the equation it really isn't worth the hassle - as for me - I have now got a supply of top quality wood for the rest of the winter and part of next - worth €120 - absolutely!!

Hi Judge,
I see where you are coming from now, if a single load of logs can serve your heating needs for this winter & part of next!
However, for those of us that will use on average at least three loads per winter, a saving of 30-40 euros a load means an effective saving of 90-120 euros (almost equivalent to the minimum WFA per individual), which is certainly not to be ignored.

I work the same way Chris, in a business capacity as well as personal. Good suppliers and tradesmen are hard to find and you can waste a lot of time and money and experience disappointment by simply shopping around to find the cheapest. Once we find a good supplier or tradesman we stick with them. We give them our loyalty and in return expect them to give us theirs.

Deep down I know that Irene did not make much, if anything, on her 'summer special' trip to Secret Valley, but she did it for me. If I was to call her now - as I need to - I will expect to pay her €120 and will be happy to pay it.

Totally agree with you there Lloyd, as I said I've known her for a long time and can only imagine what a struggle she has to bring up 7 children!

They also have a smallholding out at Nikokleia which costs more to maintain than it makes in profit I'm sure as the weekend I last had logs delivered they'd lost 4 piglets after giving them some medicine from the vet!

Followup and update of the useful thread.

I just came from Irene's premise with a big bucket of nice lemon tree wood (e30); a current price is up little bit from year ago: e140-e150 for truckload [lorry] of the wood (lemon, carob).

Still happy Yakflyer?
Surely a 25% price hike is acceptable for the "quality, volume & service"!

Any reason for the increase given Sergio?

Ireni is by far the best supplier of logs, we were getting very low last week so phoned her up and she and her husband delivered within the hour, we also had some very large logs that would not fit into our woodburner, so asked if hubby could bring his chainsaw to chop them in half, no problem she said. You can't get a better service IMO.

Yup, I'll still be using Irene. I knew that the price she was selling them for before was not economic, especially the two loads I bought in during the summer. You only had to do the sums to see she wasn't making much, if anything.

If you want "cheap", go elsewhere. Irene has a huge following, for the simple reason that she delivers full loads, fully-seasoned, and quality hardwoods only.

Aside from which, Irene was telling me that because she is now a licensed wood supplier she has to pay VAT on her earnings. Which means that on a €120 charge for a truck full of logs, over €19 goes straight to the government, in tax. Deduct the cost of fuel for delivering a heavy truckload to outlying parts of Paphos, the cost of buying the logs in...and what are you left with? Hardly a way to get rich.

Hi Yakflyer,

Information is what most come to PP to get, but it needs to be accurate & current to be of benefit.

You have previously acknowledged receiving a reduced rate for summer purchases in earlier threads, as a 'good customer'.
I am beginning to suspect that you may also receive a concessionary winter rate (in respect to your PR role for Irene's business), as you would therefore not be aware of the current rate others are likely to pay?

However, based upon the confirmation of current pricing for a truckload from Sergio, it may just be time to update your oft quoted price to avoid misleading people. ;)

I haven't bought any logs from Irene since I bought her summer specials, so I haven't a clue what her current rate is, other than what has been reported on here. I will find out when I next order from her, which won't be for a while yet.

Sergio, I'm not sure whether you understand the term 'illustrative example', but that's what the figures in my post were. The only time I ever talk to Irene is when I order from her once or twice a year. If you want her current price you can do no better than ask her. If you can find a better deal elsewhere for the same quality and quantity of wood, then go for it - it's that simple.
