I have just come back from my annual visit to Paphos and I have to say my evening walks along the seafront were spoilt by the electric trikes (one large front wheel, two small rear wheels)
They seemed to be ridden by the same young lads who went as fast as they could in the gaps between pedestrians and caused so many people to jump out of their way.
None of the local traders seemed to worry about them, but it made me and my family move away as we had a 4 year old running around with us.
This is a pedestrian area, you shouldn't have to keep jumping out of their way.

There are loads of these things running around in Ayia Napa, but they have a separate track beside the road for them.

I can't see how they work in Paphos and suspect it's just a matter of time until either someone gets flattened by one or a rider gets run over.

I think you are referring to Segway - the world’s first two wheel self-balancing electric personal transporters

It's not as if they just keep to the roads or pavements - and they are so quiet you don't know they are coming along. I came across a group on the pathway behind Debenhams in Kato Paphos - they were all over the place, and certainly a few were not in control. I just carried on walking and made them negotiate their way round me. After all, it is a footpath.

No where is safe any more what with these and the quad bikes and the buggies, mostly being driven by people who have had no previous experience.

We ran into them on Sunday, or should I say they ran into us. The first group were going along the harbour, a leader in front and one at the back. Heading off past the castle onto the coast path.
The second group were just setting off by the bus terminus, and there leader a woman on a bike came across the pedestrian crossing, nearly ramming into us walking on the path.
Not long before there is an accident, I'm sure.

The OP is talking about 3 wheeled electric trikes, not Segways, which can also be a real nuisance.

The trikes are a bout the same size as a Segway but with smaller wheels and the go much quicker. The have been running a round Bar Street for a while but you now see them speeding along the seafront or, more dangerously, along the road.

There are both around the segways tend to be on organised tours but the trikes are hired like bikes..and they are rapidly becoming a real pain and will cause accidents I am afraid.

I have a friend over from England. The other lunchtime he witnessed three young lads from the same family staying on his complex who had hired the three wheeled version from a place near The Rose bar. The age of the boys are 16, 11 & 9 and they were weaving in and out of the traffic. He went into the hire shop to confront the owner, the paperwork showed that the eldest had signed the documentation on behalf of all the brothers.

Being somewhat concerned regarding the safety of a 9 year old in command of the vehicle on the road, he got his Cypriot friend to telephone the police. Their answer: "We have had many complaints, but cannot do anything about it until there is a fatality. The government will then pass a law in order to clamp down upon the problem."

My friend knows the family very well and called them all back to the hire shop where they returned the tricycles and got a partial refund and he gave them the difference so they would not be out of pocket. His words to me : "I do not want them becoming the reason why parliament finally steps in making laws, let that be another family's problem. What is wrong with the idiots in charge who should have laws in place to stop such a dangerous practice?"

Sadly I think he is correct.

They were going up and down the harbour area yesterday by Delicious Restaurant and Stevie's Bar.

The owner of delicious was shouting at the riders to clear off. They were 3 teenage girls who told him to F**k off.

I detect a riot.

Restauranteurs don't like them, older tourists don't like them...how long before trike and rider get dumped in the sea?

As I said above, in Ayia Napa there is a separate track alongside the strip that they use so they don't get in the traffic. In Paphos they either have to travel on the road or on the pavement. They aren't quite quick enough for the road but are way too quick for the pavement.

I suspect they are going to be as welcome as timeshare touts were!

These things are a nightmare! They take up the pavement and the coastal path and expect everyone to jump out of the way at the sound of their hooters.

Not as bad as the battery trikes though!
