I know I am supposed to be a laid back Brummy Hippy Chick (even though I am not from Brum) but for the past week or so I have been an uptight Mother Hen.

I am not a materialistic person - as anyone who really knows me will vouch - but I do like a bit of sentiment. Altogether now - ahhhh. Not too much sentiment, though. I'm not mushy.

I have been stressing about whether my sons would remember to send me a birthday card that would arrive before the Big Day, as that is much more important to me than a present. Which would also be nice, but not number 1 on my list of importance.

Well now I am really excited because a couple of parcels have just arrived for me BUT, I also have a card for Mummy Spencer. So I can now stop stressing and begin to get excited about opening it on The Day. One parcel is from my brother and I know it is a book that I am itching to read. But the card is the thing that has soothed my heart.

Aren't we a strange bunch, us human beings? A few words, well chosen, on a bit of cardboard can mean so much.

Aww you see! Your sons are thinking about you - and they wouldn't miss an important birthday like this one!

I never get a birthday card from my son. :( Only a card at Christmas which his partner sends.

Sounds like it is turning into a 'Birthday Weekend' - have a great time Verity! :D

I may not be able to be there with you Verity but I will be in spirit (preferably bacardi for you) I am sure you are going to have a fabulous weekend and can't wait to find out what your surprise is.

Getting sentimental about the card is not "mush". It is perfectly normal. I dread to think what would have happened if the postman had brought nothing!!!!

:bearhug sent to you from me. We will celebrate when I get there with a belated drink or two. :heart

Awww Verity, how lovely for you,I am sure you will have a fantastic weekend now
I got cards from most people I expected them from, but my eldest daughter said I had to wait as she wanted to give it to me in person when we go back to UK on Sunday, as she wanted to see my face when I opened the card and pressie! so I really cannot imagine what it it, but I am dying to know :manic :celebrate
Got a lovely txt and card from my eldest brother, who I am not that close to, but not got a txt or card from my middle brother who I am close to  Plus my older sister is in Spain at the moment and has just had to have her beloved cat put to sleep, so she forgot to txt me too :( BUT she did phone me this morning devastated that she had not phoned me :( bless, she had a lot on her mind with the cat and everything.
I even had a card and pressie a few weeks ago, from my step-son, way in advance!!!
Cant wait to see them when I go back to UK this Sunday, that is about the only thing I miss from UK my family and my friends, although I have made some really great friends here, and have an adopted mum and dad too :celeb2 And I will be so busy visiting friends and family, these visits are already pre-arranged by friends...aww I think they miss me :D
Gosh I seem to have rambled on a bit here, must be the wine tonight
Have a great weekend Verity.
Wendy.

Hi Verity

This is not mush just a normal mum worry about her children!!

I was in Cyprus for my birthday and so was given cards to bring with me. My son wrote in his "Sorry you will have to wait for your present because it was too big for you to take with you". Which interpreted to I haven't bought you anything yet!! I was right because the day before I was due to see him when I got back my daughter got a phone call saying any ideas what I can get Mum. He did me proud though and he bought me a blouse and some Anais Anais perfume which I was most surprised he had remembered I liked,ah.

So basically I am just normal.

I feel selfish and shallow to think I would get upset if I didn't get a card from my kids, but I have such deep seated insecurities that in my mind the action of picking the card, writing it and putting it in the post equates with affirming that they care about me.

Psychology. Fascinating. What a complex thing it is to be a human being.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Had a good meal with friends at Seven St. George's last night - George had even bought a GF loaf as they had pre-warned him. So thanks for the slices, Jean, but I was catered for. Called in the New Horizon on the way home to say hi to a Cypriot friend of ours, and listened to a band called Lock Stock. Had a bit of a bop. Has anyone heard them? I thought they were fantastic. Especially when they did Smoke On The Water. I always dance to that when Woodford play it.

Anyway, off to enjoy my last day in my forties. I am really excited about being 50. I hated turning 30, and 40 wasn't an inspiring age. But for some reason 50 feels fine. Maybe it is because I have moved my life along, am where I want to be and am excited about what is to come.

Julie C - you didn't mention your birthday in your pm. Will have to have cake.

Happy Birthday Verity and enjoy your day. Good health to you.

Not sentimental at all just a loving Mum who loves her family. Proves that they love you as well and what is more precious than that. Good health and a nice family are the best gifts in this world and money cannot buy those.

Amen to that.

And good friends.

I wish I could have invited more people to Imogen's tomorrow - funds don't permit, I'm afraid. But if anyone is up that way tomorrow afternoon and fancies calling in for a drink it would be lovely to see you. There will be "my" music on the CD, and a guy playing the Baclamar too. I may even be up and dancing if the mood takes me.

Have a great day Verity

We all came out to Montreux,
On the Lake Geneva shoreline.
To make records with a mobile,
We didn't have much time.
But Frank Zappa and the Mothers,
Were at the best place around,
But some stupid with a flare gun,
Burned the place to the ground.
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky.
Smoke on the water...

They burned down the gambling house,
It died with an awful sound.
(uh) Funky Claude was running in and out,
Pulling kids out the ground.
When it all was over,
We had to find another place.
But Swiss time was running out,
It seemed that we would lose the race.
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky.
Smoke on the water...

We ended up at the Grand Hotel.
It was empty cold and bare.
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside,
Making our music there.
With a few red lights, a few old beds,
We made a place to sweat.
No matter what we get out of this,
I know I know we'll never forget.
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky.
Smoke on the water...

If you have a drink on the plane Jan, toast me with it. You and Jackie can be my virtual drinking buddies for the day.

Safe flight.
