Given we have just remembered the fallen on sunday (although tomorrow is the 11th). Should we still have a minutes silence or now celebrate the events with a minutes applause?

Is behaviour like this during a minutes silence acceptable.... Shame or acceptable?

Certainly don't think anyone 'celebrates' remembrance day, a minute of silence for quiet reflection is a small gesture ... leave as is IMO.

Are you honestly suggesting that we "celebrate" the deaths of hundreds of thousands of members of the armed forces who have lost their lives defending the liberties of the masses?
I seriously doubt your understanding of what the minutes silence is all about.
This isn't controversial..... It's just insulting.

In my opinion it should be 2 minutes silence, one before and one after 1100 especially on the 11th Day of the 11th month, 2 minutes is not a long time to give for those that made the ultimate sacrifice for others, at any other service either.

Brian, not celebrating the deaths but celebrating the memory of these brave people (men and women). Sadly there is no longer a living legacy of the Great War and organisations such as the Chelsea pensioners is dwindling. Sadly with rememberances which are silent it also leaves the stage open for the morons who just want to disrupt, or bring political agendas of their own.

Personally I am happy with a few moments of my time on 11/11/any year for reflection, and I will often do so during the year at certain times anyway.

Do we think the silence will be removed as a mainstay of rememberance on the behalf of other groups by dogooders?

I understood it to represent the Guns falling silent after years of war and I do not think applause would continue to signify that moment

John, I agree and the sentiment is engrained in me, however with the growing culture of disruption as in the video and in parade grounds across the UK, should a new kind of rememberance be institued, Or how should we treat and deal with groups of people with agendas and who disrupr such events. Ignoring them will not always work.

I think it should be silence. During that time people should be allowed their own thoughts on the loss of life, on both sides, and the futility of war.

To change to applause in the hope of drowning out those who disrupt remembrance events is to attempt to treat the symptom, not the disease. What is needed is education of those who disrupt so they understand the importance of what is being remembered. Perhaps the media could do more, but there isn't any money in it, is there.

Is the behaviour of those who disrupt acceptable in a cosiety which boasts free speech.

What is your take on the people in the video.

Probably idiots but its not clear if they are in the stadium itself and therefore do they know the silence is at that time, probably been chanting so loud they can't hear anything but themselves.

Your kindness and forgiving towards these poor souls is way off the mark Jeff, These morons were in the ground and deliberately waited for the silence to spout their songs of hate. These tricolour waving morons follow that particular team constantly.

It would be unthinkable to have a round of applause at times of rememberance. It is one thing to applaud the distinguished life of an individual like Sir Bobby Robson but quite another to even consider such a thing to commemorate the death and suffering of millions of men women and children. We took our three sons to Arras and Bethune to visit the war graves and found for an elderly uncle the grave of his 17 year old brother. The War Graves Commission do a fantastic job and show great respect for the fallen. France should be justifiably proud of the way they maintain these cemetaries. in their country and the fact they actually left a Red Rose on Roland's grave that day gave great comfort to my uncle
who treasured the photographs.
They were exceedingly bad times and thing I remember most was meeting my Father for the first time aged six in 1946. There was silence then and long be it that way.

So that we never forget
The horrors of the past
And all those that died
It is not much to ask
That we show gratitude
In total silent reflection
"thank you" for our freedom
Your lives for our protection

Our world would be so different
If it were not for these brave souls
Who protected our identity
And kept Great Britain whole
So let us keep the silence
They hear it I am sure
So that we know how grateful
We are now and for ever more

My view is that 'if it's not broke don't mend it'. the two minutes silence is a time honoured tradition; leave well enough alone.
At this time of the year I also reflect on the members of our regiment who were buried in Cyprus on its last overseas posting, they never went home.

I went to the service on 11/11 at our local memorial.
About 50 yards away from the gathering at the memorial were a bunch of 'yobs', 'hoodies'. I was aprehensive about what was about to kick off.

Bless them, they stood in silence, not approaching our little gathering until the service was over. Hats off to them!
