Frank

How did you check the speed?

Are you in UK or CY

Who is your current supplier?

etc, etc

When I'm in the UK I use plusnet.
They offer 'up to 8Meg' but as I'm three miles from a rural exchange, I haven't a hope in hell of reaching that!
My 'down' normally reaches in the top 900's - yours is 2300, that's 2.5 times faster than mine.
I suspect that most in Cyprus get sub 1Meg

Hi JB

I am in Uk and used link below

http://www.speedtest.net/

I will do a similar check later on in evening as i am suppose to be on 16meg but don't think so also on sky broadband as supplier.

Hi frank,

This is what I get here in Cyprus, on Wireless Freeway to London. My link is 2Mb/300k (standard service). You cannot be getting your full speed, it must be highly contended.

Image

Should get 4Mb/512k in a few weeks when the additional bandwidth arrives from Cyta

regards

Hi Digby

Thanks for your input.I have been told i have to run for about a month then sky will check for me if not i will want a reduction as you pay on bands ie 5mg 10mg so if i am on say 10mg they can reduce my charges.

Hi Frank,

Thought I would have a play with the system to see if it would give me more - so I tried setting the download to 2.5Mbps

not bad for Cyprus - probably the fastest internet in Trimithousa!

The only way to find your true speed is to log into your router.
Not sure if the IP address of yours would be the same as mine, but it would be something like http://192.168.*.*
The * representing a number.
user admin pass sky

Sky should be able to provide the info.

hmm a constant source of grief.
my spell with my current provider is almost over.

to get a decent bit of poke from my internet i just have to stay away from it during the hours of 3 - 8pm
it just grinds to a halt.

so who do i switch to?
i want reliability, speed all the time and decent support when you have to call them.
i was with avacom net who were frankly rubbish, offline far more than on and if you called to find out why they always blamed cyta saying it was transport problem, a quick visit to 192.168.5.2 showed cyta's bit was working fine.
i'm currently with spidernet and the service is very reliable having only dropped out twice in a year, but the contention ratio must be very high hence sometimes less than modem speeds at certain times.
I'm currently collecting a whole bunch of video's that i can drop on spidernet incase they come up with any excuses.
avacom.net once said it was my system that was at fault, so a breif run down of that would be, dual xeon 2.8ghz, 12gb ram, 3tb hard drive 2gb raid. internal home network 1gb vista 64 bit. so that's just about able to cope i think.

i wish we could get primetel here.
