Hi everyone,
could anyone give me some advice on how to get a good reception from my modem which is upstairs in the bedroom with my desktop, to my new laptop downstairs, ( the signal is strong at the foot of the stairs ) but nothing when in the lounge, 12 feet away!
I went to Ceetanet for help, who I have my broadband with, they wanted to sell me something for 100 euros, and couldn't even be bothered to talk to me hardly, so I walked!
I have a white Thomson modem. Do I need something called a router?? could I get one cheaper from somewhere.
Many thanks,
NANTA

Do you have a cordless phone or video sender near you laptop? If so this will interfere with the signal. If you do need a router, try Amazon. Routers from £20

Assuming the white modem has an aerial on it, that is a router so you don't actually need another one, just a Wireless Access Point or Wireless Repeater which are considerably cheaper.

I can get wifi from my set top box in the lounge as far as the back bedroom but it's a low signal. We live in a 3 bedroom bungalow with the bedrooms being at the very back of the house.

Connection in the kitchen is a little better but apparently the metal and concrete can cause a lot of blocks between the signal from the router.

The best signal is in the same room as the router and we run a desktop and 2 laptops from it everyday.

The problem you're having are probably due to the construction of the house/flat you are in, concrete with steel in, if you can't reposition the white box to serve the areas you need then this(click below) is a way of getting a larger coverage.

The picture explains how this extends the wireless signal though walls and ceilings.

The problem with setting it up the way suggested above is that you have to set the router/access point to "bridge mode"" this effectively reduces the speed by 50%.

I would suggest you go to a computer shop or e-bay and buy yourself a set of "home plugs"

These use the house wiring as an ethernet link allowing you to place your router in a more central position in the house. eg. the landing or to install a hard wired second access point without the upheaval of running cat 5 cable all round the house.

Could you not move the router to the area at the bottom of the stairs? You know that at this position the wifi signal reaches both the PC and the laptop.

WTF? Sorry, just not true. You set the WAP to repeater mode. No loss of speed at all. You seem to have missed the point that the WAP itself is wireless and just needs power.
