We have between 8 to12 properties on a small complex that we want to wire for internet & have been quoted a bunlde of dosh to wire each property individually.

So 1 of the properties currently has internet phone line. Would it be possible to have a strong router to service all the units (so a multi user router a strong one) based in the current location. Or would it be possible to have an outside router to point to all the units with a key or security code so only those who contribute to the cost can access it.

Help with ideas please.

Feel free to give details of your services and costs also.
Cheers

Also, can a UK router (bt for example) be used in Cyprus, or is that too easy.

Hi Tanny,

You could try to use a wireless router, but DO NOT USE an external antenna - it requires a license and you cannot get a license for 2.4GHZ external WLANs here (although I did get one last year but they will not renew it this year). The signal will not be strong enough to get through the reinforced bits. There are 3 alternatives to try, one try HomePlugs to see if the mains wiring will carry the broadband, two use access points positioned around the complex acting in relay mode, or 3 an external 5ghz transmitter which can be licensed. The problem with that is that many laptops will not receive the 5ghz signal so will have to all use a 5ghz dongle to receive the signal. None of the options is particually cheap though.

Wireless signal is easily "disturbed" by metalwork so presuming these properties are structurally re-enforced concrete then i would say you'd be struggling to get the wireless signal "inside" to the house with standard domestic stuff, even the SMB gear won't provide this power.

If you are able to provide internet to a central point you could then install a 12-port network switch (after the router Cyta provide) and then each of the 12-properties gets a network point hard-wired in them. This point could then be used directly by a laptop, PC, wireless acccess point or another router/switch - you will then have a local area network with the internet connection as a gateway. Downsides are the bandwidth could easily be hogged by one user unless you then install more kit in the middle and also it isn't very secure as each property would be able to "see" the other unless you also control the router in each property. Also if all 12 properties are online together there could be performance issues depending on what they doing with the line. Maybe this has already been quoted on ?

There are "line-of-sight" wireless systems where you could have a central distribution aerial with receiver aerials on each property. There must be line of sight between the devices. I have not seen or used this system personally.

One for Holitec i think ...

(digby - you read my mind :) )
