£6,000 for rare Villa-Newcastle cup final programme

A rare programme from the 1924 FA Cup final is expected to attract bids of up to £6,000 when it goes under the hammer at Franklin's Gardens tomorrow.
Sportingold Ltd will be selling more than 1,800 lots of sporting memorabilia in the auction.

They include a 1908 Olympic Games trials medal and an entire set of autographs from all 22 members of the 1966 England World Cup-winning squad.

The most expensive item is expected to be the programme from the 1924 cup final between Aston Villa and Newcastle because of the original colour cover.

Chris Williams, owner of Sportingold, said: "In 1923 the price of the programme was 3p and then in 1924 it quadrupled to a shilling and not many people bought it.

"The ordinary guy going to watch the football would not pay that much.

"The cup final programme costs £10 now and it would be the same if they put the price up to £40.

"What makes this lot rarer still is the fact it still has the colour wrap cover as they were quite flimsy and a lot of them did not survive."

Sportingold also expects to attract bids of more than £1,000 for a ticket from the 1923 FA Cup Final which was the first – and only – one to be played at Wembley where fans could pay on the gate.

The auction will take place tomorrow at Franklin's Gardens at 11am. Viewing of the lots is available from 9am to 12.30pm.
