Recently a certain Scottish football team has been sentenced to play 2 matches behind closed doors and had away fans banned from other in Euro games next year.

Does religious bigotry have any place in modern society or have we become too sterilised in out lifestyle and need an outlet for our frustrations and lack of self confidences.....

I refer to the bigotry in general, the football is merely the manifestation of the problem (if one is percieved to exist). The cause may be deeper.

Or could bigotry itself be classed as a sport... like badger baiting.

A word of explanation to non-followers of football might help. I can't immediately see why the sanctions relate to religous bigotry.

Pete

P.S. Why do posters say " a certain football team" or similar when the name is in the newspapers and therefore public domain? Why not use the actual name?

The team is Glasgow Rangers, but the individual team is not the issue (necessarily) is it a sypmtom of something that runs much deeper in our psychie than the pc brigade realise.

But is there an amount of bigotry and intorence in us all.

Thank you for the team name but I don't understand why the sanctions relate to religous bigotry rather than some football related misdemenour.

Singing songs with inappropriate lyrics which refer to 1690, the man in the vatican and so on, been going on since I was a kid and before, nowadays it can be recorded and reported to authorities which is what has happened.

No amount of warnings have had any success in quelling the minority of so called supporters who continue to vent out this bile at matches no matter who they are playing.

I picked up the words to these songs at primary school in the 50's not at any match, mind you it was not far from the ground of the team named.

The other half of Glasgow is just as bad, they also have a minority doing much the same thing, they collect money at matches for IRA and sing rebel songs from way back.

Things have not changed in over 50 years that I know of

In answer to your question: 'does religious bigotry have any place in modern society', the answer quite clearly is 'no'.
This is not an ailment of modern sterilised society, just an example of religous-based rivalry that has been allowed to fester for more years than we care to remember.
The issue is, should the football authorities be applauded for attempting to do something about it, or would we rather them bury their heads in the sand, as they have been all too guilty of in the past?

Its about time it was stamped out .
Rangers are not the only club in scottish football that are guilty of this ,
It goes further than that .
We dont allow Racist song at football matches , so why should they be allowed to sing songs
about killing catholics or protestants ?
Hit them hard where they will feel it , ban there fans from away games , then if they continue
then make them play there games behind closed doors , that will soon put a stop to it ..

I have moved this to the sports bar ..

Of course we are aware that the ugly sisters in Scotland are the main protagonists of this, however it also pervades into every day life. And even small teams have an element.

Should there be a plcae or some free speech forum location that people can visit to expound their vile.

Or is the George the only option

What I am suggesting is that there me some place that anyone with any axe to grind can display or shout his message without reprisal in a controlled environment to get it out the system rather than be pent up.

ME a closet bigot? Blimey never let it be said. I may have come out of the closet for many things but a bigot.... No.

Tanny's bigotry is anything but in the closet. He's usually quite open about it.

I like this bit the best ..

Its a bit like asking if there is a dedicated area, where you can take an old age pensioner to mug them,
without getting into trouble .. :doh
