I agree with you mate, you get a far better quality of food, service & atmosphere than you do down in the tourist restaurants, maybe because its their living & not just there to dish out dozens of dishes as quick as possible

I have always been a big taverna fan rather than the restaurants. I like to go out to the villages around paphos and try out each taverna. |

Konia has to be the best one I have tried so far, though there are many good ones. my wife had the steak at konia, it was so big, you could have put a saddle on it, and rode off

If you just like an absolute cracking feed, then I can heartily recommend Costas Taverna in Peyia, it's great value for money and there is just moutains of scrumptious food. We also used to visit the taverna in Agia Marinouda, right at the top of the hill. It's lovely in winter time as they have a real fire inside that keeps you cosy and again, the food is delicious. We haven't been for a while now as we moved to the other side of Paphos, but I would recommend it to anyone in that neck of the woods. P. |

At this point the most popular and highly rated taverna (according to my site members) is Viklari / The Last Castle, as you enter the Akamas park from St George, you pass White River and a few hundred metres come across the sign for them. Its a souvla, potatoes and salad kinda place which makes it rather limited compared to most tavernas but they obviously do that very well ! I also really liked Kyparissos in Kathikas. St George has a great view but i've been a couple of times and the fish has been great but the service was a bit lame, popular place though. Just up the road from the above you have West End which again specialise in local fresh fish (ring to check availability). I haven't had a bad meal in Angelika in Chlorakas or Krasares in Kissonerga. Thats not, obviously, meaning everywhere else is no good, but with over 500 (estimated) places to eat in the Paphos region trying new places is key to finding good (or bad) places. Hope that helps those in the SW are of the region ! |

I think that you will find Viklari/Last Castle closed until late Spring. We are always treated as long lost friends when we turn up for Sunday lunch , which must be booked. Konia Tavern is also in out top 5. Exceptional value. |

I ate there twice last year,, can you believe it , I only found it last year... and I have been up that road so many times.. The first time I was in a saloon car 
took the jeep the second time

I am planning to add "opening season" and "opening times" onto my site for restaurants/taverns as and when i get the official word from the owners ... siga siga I would certainly call first before travelling to any restaurant, just to check they are (a) open if out of peak season and (b) they have space during peak season ! |

'Love the last castle, but i do think the pork is better than the chicken! Aristo's place in Tsada has a very limited menu, but the Peppered, Diane and Garlic steaks are absolutely fantastic and well worth the trip if you've never been there. another favorite for sunday lunch is Marias in Fyti. it's sort of a meze, but better and cheaper (right next to the church) |

Ruth not been there myself, but heard great things i used to love the olive tree at the end of the village, but last i heard, he'd stopped giving out bargains... it pushed it out of the "everyday" and into the "once a month" bracket still good pork chops though, and the aubergine starters are lovely! |

Although I love the Konia Taverna, a local one for us is To Laiko as we can walk to it and enjoy the food. Only problem with that one is they serve it all too quickly as they are so busy doing take aways for locals. I could walk to Seven St George as well but have been in there and I am not one for sauces over everything and they are a bit pricey compared to so many others. |

Jean - do you know the big church in Geroskipou as it is on the opposite side of the road from there. If not go past Seven St Georges take the next right and it is further up on the left. Have had many a good meze in there - in fact the only place I will have a meze as he told me all the dishes before I ordered. I know it has changed hands but apparently they are keeping the same cooks. |

I find that Fetter, especial in the summer when you dine outside takes so beating. Definately the best calamary in town. |

so as a newbie to the Taverna thing... Whats close (near to Universal), good food and reasonable price with good service? Or am I asking too much  Also whats a 'reasonable price' come to mention it!!!!
