The First Paphos
People Taverna Club
Melania Taverna
The concept of a Taverna Club was idealised at the end of December
2007, when I came on board as a moderator. Both Neil and I
seperately expressed an interest in the forum hosting taverna
nights, and I said I would be happy to arrange them. Pete and Martin
thought it was a good idea, and Pete laughingly made me the Social
Secretary.
In truth I imagined maybe 20 people being interested in visiting a
different taverna each month. So you can imagine my surprise when we
had over 70 people sign up for the first one in March.
Luckily Matheos at the Melania Taverna took it all in his stride and
laid on a magnificent meze for us. The atmosphere was lively, and
people mixed and chatted to each other, putting names to faces and
cementing new friendships.
Neil came into his own calling the raffle prizes and getting into
every photo imaginable. He was shunted out of the way when he had
his photo taken with Chaz – a retired headmaster who came out for a
quiet meal with a couple of friends. Chaz much preferred having his
photo taken with a nice young lady. So he had his photo taken with
me and looked much happier about it. Visit the Paphos People photo
gallery and see for yourself.
A good time was had by all and a grand total of EUR613 was made
which will go to the Friends of Paphos Hospice.
Although I make the arrangements and liaise with the taverna owners
to ensure people are catered for properly, special thanks must go to
Jackie for her help in collecting the money.
The next Taverna Club will be held at Costas Taverna in Pegia on
25th April. Make sure you put your name down if you want to reserve
a place.
Verity.
